Multiples

Very curious

Hi everyone. This week was a very interesting week for my family. We found out we are going to be having twins. I am curious if theres more to preparing for twins than for a single child than just doubling up on everything? These 2 will make child 3 and 4 for us. So luckily this wont be our first time out with a baby.

  • Congrats!  I'm also expecting #3 and #4.  Your pregnancy will likely be different- more Dr. Appts, ultrasounds, etc.   We're not doubling up on everything in terms of gear.  We're going to wait to see what the babies like in terms of bouncy seats, swings, etc. and will buy a 2nd of the items that they like.

  • Congrats! I think pp's advice is wise. Beyond having two car seats and two cribs and then enough diapers, and clothes for two (and a twin nursing pillow if you plan to BF and double stroller(s)) I think you can hold off on getting a second of the other gear until you see what your babies like.

  • Oh and it also might help to read a book like Mothering Multiples or Juggling Twins just to think through some of the logistics in advance.

  • Maybe setting up help from friends or family to come watch your other little ones for a few hours a day the first few months, or even take them out while you bond, breast feed, try to rest, juggle two new born babies.

  • Our firstt 2 kids will be 8 and 6 by time these 2 are bon so that will be a little helpful(at least im hoping it will be) any suggestions with the stroller. Im finding that im only finding that they only hold one carseat are there any out there that hold 2?

  • I believe the baby jogger city select, stroll air duo and the new indietwin all take 2 car seats.  Some only take one brand (maxi cosi), while others are more universal.

  • my girls were #3 and #4 for us.  I still had my swing, highchair, and jumperoo from my 3 yr old, so I didn't have to rebuy much. I started stocking up on diapers and wipes whenever I found great deals so I wouldn't have to go out immediately and buy them when the girls got here.

I don't know if you live near anyone who can help you out with your older ones, but that was a major deal for me. I ended up on hospital bedrest for 9-10 weeks. I am a SAHM therefore my kids don't go to daycare so my mom was able to come from out of state and stay with my older ones and keep the household kind of running while I was gone. Hopefully you won't have to go through anything like that. But when we finally got home, our neighbors' college age daughter brought dinner over a few times as well as taking my 3 yr old out of the house.. total lifesaver.

    Congratulations!

  • I'm kind of a baby gear freak, so I have two of everything! And I mean everything! Swings, bouncy seats, excersaucers, bumbos, PnP's, play gyms, baby bjorn carriers, double grocery cart cover, walkers, johnny jump-ups, baths seats (only one tub though), bassinets, and of course, double the toys and clothes!

I also have double of the obvious things, like cribs, car seats, high chairs, and a few different double stollers (DSNG, Joovy Caboose triple tandem, and Combi Twin Sport).

I really just love to buy all this stuff, so I'm sure you could do without a lot of it. I did get some stuff on Craig's List, so that's always something to check out. The twins were my #2 and #3, so I was trying to match some stuff from my oldest daughter, but found that the patterns, etc. were already discontinued (even though she's only 3 year older). I was able to find a matching swing ($10), matching bouncy seat ($5), matching PNP ($30), and the list goes on. I also went to my local Mother's of Multiples Consignment sale and got bumbos, slings, PNP sheets, and all kind of other stuff!
