made a potentially big mistake-ugh! (repost from FB page)

Ok I am totally freaking out...So this whole pregnancy has put me in a super nesting phase and I decided to refinish/paint an old antique dresser for the baby room. I love DIY projects and love the sense of satisfaction that comes along with them, so I told my husband hands off- I want to do this one.
I had to do a ton of sanding to the dresser, so I bought a mask to avoid dust. Well, today my husband looks at the dresser (as I am priming) and says "amazing how something from the 1940s can look so good again." I never gave a thought to it being that old, and all of a sudden my mind started racing about the dangers of lead paint. If this dresser is that old, no doubt they used lead paint on it right? And I sanded the whole damn thing...with a mask, but hell, we all know those arent totally safe.
Could my baby be in danger from the lead paint dust I probably inhaled?? I should call and discuss with my doc, right? Anyone have experience with this sort of stuff while pregnant before? I am totally freaking out!

  • Is any of the paint left?  You can buy lead paint tester kits and if any's left test it to see.  And yes, I would call the doc ASAP.

Unfortunately no paint is left. I was at the point of priming when DH said something. I vacuumed up the dust- so I guess I could test the dust that is still in the vacuum right? I can't believe I did this! SO STUPID!

  • I did the same thing about a month ago. I never talked about it with my doctor though. Maybe I should have... Now I'm freaked out.

  • I believe you can use the home test kits on dust as well:  but don't you go near it, make DH do it!

Ah! I'm sorry to freak you out. Do you know when your piece of furniture was made? I am going to call my doc first thing tomorrow and talk with them...I'll let you know what they say.

  • Take the precautions, but don't freak out just yet. There were many different types of paint, so it may not be lead. Plus it could have been painted in the 80's. It didn't use to be very popular to paint furniture.

Try not to worry unless you have a reason to. I know that may be

hard. But there are still so many chances that you're fine.

No, I don't. It's OLD though.. I'm thinking 1900 to 1910? From what I've read, it is very unlikely that anything is wrong. It usually comes from prolonged exposure over lengths of time.

  • Try not to stress out.  What's done is done.  At least you wore a mask, and it's not like you were eating the paint chips.  Relax, and give your dr a call tomorrow.

  • In the field I'm in (heritage management, historic preservation), we come into contact with a lot of potentially hazardous materials, like lead paint and asbestos siding, on older homes being restored. You have to honestly have a lot of contact with these materials for a prolonged period of time for them to be hazardous. Ask your OB about it if you're really concerned. You can never be too safe!
