Pregnancy Books?

Any suggestions? I have the 'What to expect when you're expecting" app and am not too impressed. Also, I heard the book is pretty condescending. I saw good reviews for the Mayo Clinic Guide. Would love to hear your ideas.

TIA!

Re: Pregnancy Books?

  • i have a whole bunch of baby books...my OBGNY actually specifically said NOT to read what to expect when youre expecting...but i do have (and like) the Mayo Clinic Guide to Healthy Pregnancy. I also just picked up Pregnancy Cookie & Nutrition for Dummies - gives great recipe ideas!

  • What is wrong with WTE? I liked what I saw of the Pregnancy Bible and The Expectant Father is great for DH.

I've heard the language talks down (like talking to a teenager...calling sperm 'the guys' etc...) I think I would tire of that quickly.

I'll have to check out the pregnancy bible! Thanks!

  • My OB/GYN gave me a great book when I first became her patient. I'm pretty sure it was from the American Pregnancy Association, but now that I've recently moved I can't find it to save my life. I also loved Natural Hospital Birth by Cynthia Gabriel. It has a ton of useful information in it and it has helped me create a birth plan and taught me about the different stages of labor. I think anyone could learn from that book!

  • I have really liked the Mayo Clinic Guide that was previously mentioned and am seriously considering buying it for myself.  It's really easy to read, even though it's a really fat book but definitely doesn't make you feel stupid reading it.  I like the guides in it that say what is "typical" vs. what you should call your doctor about.  I checked out Better Food for Pregnancy which is a recipe book as well as educational about what to eat, not to eat, etc. from the library but haven't read too much of that one. Hope that helps :)

  • I've been reading The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy. It's not as informative as the other suggestions but I was looking for a lighter read. I don't agree with the author on everything (i.e. don't exercise during pregnancy) but there are some parts where I have laughed so hard I started crying.
  • I bought "The Mother of all Pregnancy Books" it is really good. List the top 10 worries for each trimestrr, goes over anything & everything you need/want to know. So far I think it is a great ine!

  • I have read WTE and wasn't that impressed. I just bought "The Pregnant Body Book", which I absolutely LOVE, but its a lot more about the anatomy, developmental biology, and genetics of conception to birth. I am a huge biology geek though...

  • I read "The Mother of all Pregnancy Books" and I liked it. I will also be picking up "The Mayo Clinic Guide" and I'm waiting for "Your Pregnancy Week by Week".

I will have to look into The Expectant Father. DH need's a good book to read and has been asking which one's I thought would be good. I really didn't have a clue for one for him.

  • I love my "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" and I recommend it to everybody!! The lady and B&N told me that she does not recommend WTE at all. So I didn't even bother to get that one.

I also bought "Pregnancy & Birth The Essential Checklist" this is not all about pregnancy, it takes you through pregnancy all the way to babies first year. And I also bought Belly Laughs by Jenny Macarthy, just for fun. It was pretty funny, but she had a pretty rough pregnancy so that kind of scared me.
