transitioning to sippy cup

We need help! We struggled with Jocelyn too, but apparently I didn't learn any lessons. We probably should have started transitioning earlier this time around - oops. Connor gets bottles of breast milk all day at daycare, then I breastfeed in the evenings and on weekends. I've already dropped a pumping session (woohoo!) and am using up my frozen stash with the intention of being done pumping completely by the time he turns 1 in 3 weeks. I'd like to switch him to cow's milk and cups completely at that time, though I may still BF in the evenings or whatever.

I have tried giving him all types of sippy cups with water, breastmilk, and even cow's milk and formula but he cries and throws the cup every time. I know if we just offer the cup and don't give the bottle as an option that he will eventually drink when he gets thirsty enough, but I know that will be painful (for us!) to get through and am saving that as our last-ditch plan. Any other advice/tips?

Re: transitioning to sippy cup

  • Our experience with DS was the same :(  . We gave up on the sippy cups and started offering him drink off our cups and he preferred that.  Of course it gets messy so we had to keep a close eye and remind him to drink slowly. Eventually we worked our way back to sippys, since they come in handy (especially in the car) or on the go. Sorry, i don't have much advice..this was just our experience.

  • I don't have any great advice since I'm a ways off from dealing with sippys, but I do remember reading somewhere that they might prefer a straw - do they make toddler cups with those?  Might be worth a try...

  • I was going to suggest a straw cup, too.  DD seems to prefer those.  We've had great success with the Playtex straw cups from Target.

  • i just realized i forgot to respond to this post.  and unfortunately this post has me struggling to remember how we did the transition with DD #1!

sidenote:  can you believe our pedi's office recommends NO sippy cups at all.  they claim they are just a glorified bottle.  ummm i'm pretty sure no parent follows that rule of theirs!

so anyways.  i think we did intro a regular cup with DD #1 probably around 6 months and just let her practice with it (i think we probably gave her sips of water).  i'm pretty sure she liked it. when it was time to get rid of bottles completely i just made the switch when we moved to whole milk.  milk only went in a sippy cup, never a bottle.

as PP mentioned we also used the sippy cups with a straw in the beginning.  she had a hard time learning - but someone recommended putting a bottle nip on top of the straw so she would get the idea that she had to suck to make it work.

anyways, hope that all makes sense and helps!
