Formula Mama - please come in

How much are you feeling your child??  My son is 2 1/2 weeks old and I am feeding him 3 oz every 3 hours - I was thinking of increasing to 4 oz but is he too young for that??

Also do you wake to feed your child - I am still waking him every three hours even though he is back up to his birth weight.  Should I keep waking him??

Re: Formula Mama - please come in

  • I have never formula fed from the very beginning, but 3 oz every 3 hours sounds pretty good, unless he's finishing the bottles and wanting more, then up it to 4.  I am supplementing a couple bottles a day and the most my daughter will eat is 2 ounces, so for a 2 1/2 week old 3 ounces sounds like a lot!

As far as waking to eat, I never once woke my daughter to eat, even in the hospital so I would say you are ok to let him sleep for a max of 4 hours during the day and as long as he wants at night!

  • my daughter is 5 weeks old and she has been taking 4 ounces since she was 3.5 weeks. We feed her 4 ounces every 3.5-4 hours. At her night time feeding we give her 5 ounces (we just started that at 5 weeks) We don't ever wake to feed her but she wakes up at 4 hours to eat anyways. Hope that helps :)

  • My LO is 2 weeks and he's been eating 4 oz every 4-5 hours since 1 week (his pediatrician suggested we bump up to 4oz). He was 8lb2oz at birth and never went below that, so he's kind of a big baby.
I don't wake him for feedings, and haven't since the 1 week appointment. I'm definitely in the 'never wake a sleeping baby' camp, though!
  • Ian is eating 3.5-4 oz every 3-4 hours (usually 4-5 hrs at night).  He is a bottomless pit at 10 days old.

Our pedi said that he should be eating half of his birth weight in ounces every four hours by 10 days old. He weighed 9 lb 7 oz at birth  and is back up above his birth weight.

We don't wake him at night, but he wakes himself usually at 4 to 4.5 hours and is hungry.

  • My little guy takes 4-5 oz every 4-5 hours or so although there are times where he'll eat 6. Our pediatrician says to always (no matter age) feed on demand so we have never woken to feed.

  • My LO just started eating 4oz every 3-4 hours...He's 4wks old today.
  • E still does 3 oz every 3 hours.  We will probably increase her to 3.5 oz when she starts acting like she's still hungry after a bottle or if she's consistently hungry after shorter periods of time.  She's  not doing either of those yet.  Fwiw when weswitched to formulaat 2.5 weeks our pedi told us not to go over 24-26oz in a day.  So 3oz was right on for that.

Our pedi told us we could stop waking her to eat once she hit her birth weight.  She usually wakes herself about 3 hours after her last feeding but at night will sometimes go 4-5 hours, which is awesome :)

  • My daughter is 1 month and she is eating about  2-3 ozs right now, 3 ozs mostly she was 4 weeks early so I dont know if that has anything to do with it. She wakes about every 3 to 4 hours to eat.

We're formula feeding at night right now, and the girls are taking 4 oz. We've been on 4 oz since around 3 weeks or so. I read somewhere that in the beginning you should be doing 3 oz every 3 hours. (But the girls were so hungry, I decided to up it.) I also read that you should try increasing the amount one ounce every month until you reach 8 oz. They were pretty close to being ready I think. And now, it seems like they maybe ready to up it to 4.5.

Since I upped their formula, they were sleeping longer stretches at night. I asked their pedi if I should still be waking them and her words were, "Mama said never wake a sleeping baby." She said that if they're sleeping longer at night, they'll generally catch their feeding back up during the day if you miss one. The girls have been cutting out their 3 AM feeding, which has been SO nice for me. They've consistently slept from 12 AM to 6 AM for the last three weeks. (But they are hungrier during the day, so they've been BFing, and getting supplement. And I assume that they're just self regulating and catching back up on what they need.)

SOOOO JEALOUS! Way to go with the six hours of sleep.
