If you're like me, get over it and go to the dentist!

I'm afraid of dentists.  So afraid that I haven't been to one in years, but when I cracked a wisdom tooth yesterday, I figured that I better get my act together and go before it started hurting or got infected. I have never had any dental pain or problems, so I figured that as long as I got it taken care of right away, things would probably be fine.

Not so much - it turns out that it's already infected, so I'm on antibiotics until they can extract it next week.  Also, I had the privilege of getting yelled at by the dentist for a weirdly long time about how irresponsible I am for not going sooner...really helps my phobia...jerk.

  • oh no! Sorry to hear!

I am w/ you.... I am SO scared of the dentist.  I haven't been to one for a very very long time.  At least high school.. and haven't experienced problems, pain, etc.  I've felt a cavity for some time now and w/ being pregnant and people commenting how important care for teeth is I decided it's time, so I'm going in a few weeks.. I am so afraid! My MIL works as a dental assistant, so I don't know if that's comforting or will embarass me w/ whatever outcome there may be... I'm hoping for a "good" experience so it won't mess w/ my phobia as your dentist did.

  • Sorry that you share my fear!

The good news is that you will feel better once it's done...phobia or no! Try to find someone of yelp that get's good reviews from other people that haven't been in a while.  I kind of knew that this would go as it did from what other said, but I was too worried to leave it until next week in case I needed abx (which I did).

    Good luck!

  • I had not been in 10 years (phobia also from my childhood). Dentristry is a million times different now than the 80's and 90's. I have a mouth full of silver cavities that apparently crack your teeth. So I had to get three crowns over weak teeth. It was a great experience. Maybe you should try a different dentist.
  • I just went to the denist on friday. I have been seeing the same denist since I was a little girl and he is wonderful and I am very grateful after reading about all of your experiences. FY I though, if you are worried about having a cavity you should probably go ahead and go because my denist told me that the best time to do work on a soon to be mommy was between wks 14-20 if I remember right. I know it was no later then 20 weeks.

  • Well, you can get a cleaning at any point in your pregnancy, and that's super important because gums tend to go haywire when your pg. The best time for elective treatment is in your second trimester, but emergency care(like root canals/extractions infected teeth) can and should be done as needed. That plaque and tartar that builds up on teeth can get into your bloodstream and premature birth has been associated with advanced gum disease. I have seen cavities grow a lot faster in a pg woman in general. It's like our oral pH is off and makes the environment easier for cavities to grow-and we're not exactly really watching what we eat, just trying to eat what we can stomach. That tends to be high carb/sugary foods.
  • I just went last week! I love my current dentist - found her after a long hiatus from dental care. In my case, while I do fear the dentist, it was a financial matter. I was in graduate school for forever and had no money and no dental insurance. She was amazingly understanding and didn't shame me. I don't mind going to her now because she gave such a reasonable response.

How do you feel about lodging a complaint and finding someone else?

  • I too, hate going to the dentist but after not going for 3 years and experiencing a very long uncomfortable cleaning I knew I had to keep it up.  I have been going every 6 months now and my cleanings are so easy and I don't get any lectures anymore!

I have been so good about flossing but now that I'm pregnant it's so uncomfortable with how sensitive my gums have become.  But I'm trying my best.

Just find a good hygenist and it'll be so much better.  I think the hygenist is more important than the actual dentist.

  • I went to the dentist for the first time last week since I was 19... And it was an emergency situation. Infected impacted wisdom tooth..blah. I don't remember EVER being in this much pain for anything. So I now will have to consult with an oral surgeon for extractions. Thankfully the dentist I went to didn't yell at me. He was very matter of fact and invited me back for regular care after I get my wisdom teeth straightened out.

     Im sorry for your experience:(
