Hair Loss during Pregnancy

Good Morning Ladies,

I'm having a bit of trouble, I'm at 6 weeks and for the last week everytime I run my hands through my hair or wash it I pull out a ton of hair, like a handful at a time.  Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing it too?  I have my doctors appointment on Tuesday, but would love to hear any feedback you ladies might have.

Thanks,

Re: Hair Loss during Pregnancy

  • Sorry wish I could help you. I am going through the exact opposite. I used to lose tons of hair but lately my scalp has been hanging on to most of it. Its probably no big deal but I would bring it up to your doctor at your next appointment if it worries you.

  • It has to do with your hormones just going wack right now. I actually didn't have any trouble with my last pregnancy until I stopped breastfeeding. Then I had like huge clumps that came out and if I pulled my hair back, it just looked horrible! I asked the doctor if there was anything that could be done and they said no. Hopefully you'll have more luck than I did!

  • I have this problem as well. Some people get thicker hair, some people lose their hair. Thankfully mine is pretty thick so you can't really tell.

Same here!  I always used to lose tons of hair and now it seems like I'm losing none at all!

  • I'm totally losing more hair. I notice it most in the shower. Oddly, that always happened in the 2ww, and this time it just hasn't stopped. Totally normal. :)
  • I started noticing it near the end of my last pregnancy and it continued to fall out through breast-feeding and once I stopped it was coming out in clumps. It's still falling out at alarming rates... it sucks and I really hope it isn't too noticeable. I don't think there is anything you can do... but it really does suck.
  • Ask to have your thyroid checked.

It's normal to lose hair post-partum, but mine was just devastating.  It continued into my 2nd pregnancy and I finally said something.

Turns out, my thyroid was messed up and THAT can cause it.  Abnormal thyroid readings can be a "normal" part of pregnancy, or it can be something to be concerned with.

I'd definitely bring it up.  It's totally normal post-partum (and, it's alarming), but if it's happening now, I'd ask to be checked out, just in case.  Not that it's dangerous (don't want to worry anyone), but if there is something going on with the thyroid, it's better to know so they can keep on top of it.

My TSH was all messed up, so they ran a larger thyroid screen and everything was normal, so we just let it go.  After I delivered, it went back to normal (but I still lost a ton of hair in the normal PP fashion!).

  • Crying That's totally me. I was going to post about it as well. This began when I found out I am pregnant, and still hasn't stopped! So annoying, I hope it gets better soon because my hair is also freaken thin!
  • I just read about this last night in one of my pregnancy books - perfectly normal.
  • I feel like mine is falling out too! every morning, when I dry my hair, a ton comes out. I have thin hair to begin with, so i hope it stops soon!
