Pregnant after IF

Classes

Are you taking any classes (i.e. breastfeeding, childbirth prep)?  If so, what are you taking?  And when are you signing up for them and taking them?  Which classes are you taking?  My doctor's office told me to do it at 16 weeks.  I haven't done it yet cause it seems so early.  The hospital my doctor is affiliated with has about 8 classes.   I am sure I want to take some but not sure about some others.

Re: Classes

  • Um, I'm 25 wks and haven't done any of them yet because I'm afraid I'll forget everything before the baby shows up.  16 weeks sounds really early, unless you are taking the full multi-week childbirth class (I know some lamaze and Bradley classes are stretched out over like 8-10 weeks).

I am planning to take the breastfeeding class and the Infant CPR class, which are both 1 day classes.  I feel like I don't really need the infant care class because I've spent plenty of time bathing and diapering nieces/nephews over the years.  I'm hoping to do them in March, so I guess when I'm like 30-33 weeks.

I am hoping they will offer the one day Refresher Lamaze class before baby comes, because I think DH would feel better having at least one class session rather than just relying on the books.  I'm planning to labor at home until I'm hopefully 6-7cm dilated and 2-3 mins apart, and just relying on the yoga positioning and meditation techniques I've been learning on my own (plus I hired a doula who will be at the house with me).

  • DH and I took a prenatal class, and just completed it last weekend. :) The class was pretty much just about explaining the stages of labour, different methods of labouring, what to expect etc.. Everyone in the class was 33 weeks +.
  • My doctor told me to sign up at 14 weeks but the classes don't start until April. We are taking a 5 week class/ one night a week childbirth class during April and the first week of May. I am also singed up for a breastfeeding class with one class early June and the other after birth in July.

That is why I am asking.  I hate to sign up early to these classes and everyone look at me like why is she here so early.  Even when I looked at cribs the other day the looked at me like I was nuts for looking so early :(

Oh so maybe my doctor wants me to just sign up early.  Maybe the hospital I am going to has you sign up early.  I will ask my doctor on Monday.

I didn't think it was early especially since they told me that it may take 16 weeks to get it delivered and they will do 6 months of layaway.

We were told to sign up early because class size is limited. We'll be ~36 weeks when the series ends.

  • We're taking 3 classes geared towards multiples (care, breast feeding, and childbirth) as well and infant CPR and a tour of the birthing unit. We are trying to get them all done before May, so that even in the worst case scenario of bed rest and early babies, we should have them all covered.

I'm so glad you said this, because, I was leaning towards the same thing, and I was starting to think I was a little crazy! I do think we will take infant CPR though. But as far as labor and delivery, and BF, I hope i can just figure it out.

  • Oh and I just literally signed up for my classes, we are doing the childbirth one in April and breastfeeding in May.  Those are the dates that worked best for us, it might be "early", but we are cool with that.

  • We are taking some. We took  a one day Birth Class which was eye opening. LOL And we are taking a Breast Feeding class and a Basic Infant Care class. I'm happy that we are doing them so we can't wait.  :-)

  • We took hynobirthing which I loved but I wished we stated earlier. I started at 28 weeks. I would recommend staring ASAP.

I took a baby care class because my husband wanted to. It was the

Most helpful class so far. I have nieces and nephews ranging from 1-9years old. I can change a diaper withy eyes closed and swaddle like a champ. So being the

cocky know it all nurse with years of baby experience that I am I only did this class for my hubby. However I got a lot of great tips from the class and there are many changes since my necie was born a year ago. So I would highly recommend a baby care class.

I havn't done my breast feeding class yet but plan on it.

I feel infant CPR is a must!

  • We're doing a full day childbirth class next Saturday, so I'll be 30 weeks. We knew we wanted to do the one day class at our hospital and by the time the next one is offered I'll be 35 weeks and I was afraid I'd be uncomfortable by then.

I'm also signed up for a newborn care class at around 33 weeks and a breastfeeding class at 35 weeks. Those are each only a couple hours.

One warning though - I really wanted to do a CPR class too, but ran into a snag. My hospital doesn't offer them so I planned to go to the other local hospital for one. When I called a few weeks ago to enroll in one, they told me that they don't allow pregnant women to do one after 24 weeks or so because of the breathing techniques and I was too far along. I had NO idea about this, so that is definitely one you should look into doing early. DH and I will instead go through an online class to at least know some of the techniques in case of an emergency, and maybe we'll pick up a regular class after the baby's here.
