Irish twins?

My dr today at my 6 week appointment said to be careful of having irish twins bc I refused birth control. Anyone have irish twins?

Re: Irish twins?

  • nope. but are you sure you want to get pregnant again so soon? If you are EBF there is a good chance you aren't fertile anyway, but you obviously can still get pregnant.

after a c section in particular, it's a big stress on your body. I am getting a Mirena IUD within the next few weeks. We might want one more, but I don't feel it's wise to get pregnant again so soon after surgery.

  • I had my daughter via scheduled c-section in June and I'm pregnant again now, due in July.  My Dr. didn't advise against it or for it either way.  And I will have another scheduled c-section with this baby.

  • FWIW, my brother and I are also Irish twins (1 year and 1 day apart.)  My mom had a vaginal with him (first) and a c-section with me (2nd.)

  • Not quite, but almost. My kids birthdays are only 3 weeks apart. What's your question?

  • They aren't Irish twins, but my boys are a year and 20 days apart. My pregnancy with Lucas was fine, but I was a little more uncomfortable due to the scar tissue.

  • My girls are 11.5 months apart. My pregnancies were identical, and my Dr. never warned me against irish twins when i refused bc (i don't like being on it--makes me too emotional). Both were c-sections and were wonderful! They are 4 & 5 now and I'm pregnant with my 3rd (will have a csection with this one too).

  • It is good for your uterus to have a break (ideally a year to two years between pregnancies). But hey - lots of women have babies close together. To each her own!

  • No worries. In nursing school we were taught that a year or two years is recommended (the rate of preterm births and other complications usually drop after that time). But if your healthy, ready, and get the green light from your OB - more power to ya!
  • I have Irish twin (362 days apart)

I was fine with my 2nd pregnancy. There were issues but it later was determined it came from the fact my progesterone is low and not because of how close.

I actually bounced back quicker after my DS's c-section.

This one is going to be about 13 months younger than DS.

  • Glad that things went smoothly (for the most part). Congrats on your third!
  • Mine will be 15 months apart. My OB said nothing about it but I have to see a perinatal doctor since DD1 was a preemie. The perinatal doctor told me that having them that close can lead to growth problems. I'm not sure why but I have to see them once a month so they will monitor growth anyways. I wish the OB would have said something.

  • DS was born April 27th and DD will be born April 4th (if everything goes correctly of course). My ob was more than fine with us getting pg asap because of how long it took to conceive DS. She said that current research isn't really strong enough to show that great of a negative effect on your body. A year between births was perfectly fine in her opinion, and any more than that is for the sanity of the mother. I will say this pg is much harder on me physically. DS is a very big baby and is not walking or crawling yet. So I have to constantly pick up his 25 lb+ little self. I guess it's a toss up though between doing that and chasing a toddler around. I'm so excited to have them so close, but in all honesty- had I realized how painful this pg would be I would have probably waited. Then again, it might not have made a difference anyway.

  • My doc didn't mind but we were also an infertility case so she didn't even bring BC up with us. I ended up getting pregnant 4 months pp! This pregnancy took everyone by surprise, even our RE we did our IVF with in 2010 lol. He called this one our freebie lol.

Unless I go into labor early my RCS will be 2 weeks after my LO turns 1. My doctor didn't bring up any concerns with me though.
