Nursing Bras/Tanks

Hi ladies,

Where is the best place to get a nursing bra, and be fitted correctly?

I am on the Eastside, but will drive wherever need be.. I was a 32DD pre pregnancy, and right now a 38DDD (32 weeks along)

I want to make sure I get the right size, and I have no idea where to even start.

Thanks!

Re: Nursing Bras/Tanks

  • Definitely Nordstrom. They are very knowledgeable about how to fit a pregnant woman. I got an Anita bra for daytime (with underwire), and an Elle MacPherson bra for night (no underwire). Both have been awesome. And, if for some reason the one you get doesn't work out, Nordstrom has an awesome return policy. For example, just today I took back the nursing bra I've been using since late July because one of the hooks broke. The gal goes, "Oh, let's get you a new one!" Easy cheesy! :)

  • Just want to chime in and recommend getting a few nursing tanks for the first few weeks. I lived in them until my supply calmed down and regulated (with both kids), and with #1 I bought bras while I was still pg, and they didnt fit for a long time. I was way bigger than I anticipated after my milk came in (think A pre-pg, B while pg, then to a D when my milk came in- it was nuts!), and the tanks were just so comfy and practical. Maybe just guess a size for the bra, to have one on hand, but wait to get a nicer one until your supply evens out. Target has great nursing tanks, and I've even seen the Bravado ones there now too!

  • I agree with all the PPs, but I also got a few cheaper nursing bras at JC Penney and Target (as well as my 2 Nordstrom ones) so I didn't break my budget, and they were comfortable and functional.  The other tanks I really liked having were from Undercover Mama, which makes strapless tanks that can attach to any nursing bra.  I liked having the option to occasionally wear an underwire bra when going out or to work so my post-baby shape looked a little better, and still have the coverage of a nursing tank.

  • I went to Motherhood for during pg for bras.  They were functional and cheap though it was not a great place for being fitted.  I got a few nursing tanks for after the baby came and to sleep in. They are just fine and you can eyeball the size in these as they come in S/M/L.

A month or so pp I went to Bella Materna in Seattle to get fitted.  They make nursing bras and tanks.  I went from a 36C to a 36G pp and they had bunches of bras that just made my boobs feel better.  Since I decided I was into bf for the long haul the $70 to $80 a pop made it totally worth it.  They do have sale items which the lady doing my fitting did not hold back in showing me at all.  They also have a tank top that made me feel sexy pp which ... well let's just say it had been a long time since I felt like that.

  • I also waited, and am glad I did.  I changed a ton [and I didn't think I could get bigger] after K was a few days old.  I did Target nursing tanks and then got fitted at Evergreen Hospital's boutique for nursing bras - they were awesome and had all kinds of other stuff I needed.  I got my pump and supplies there as well.

I did Nordstrom for my pregnancy bras, they were great as well.

  • Definitely DO hit Nordstrom's for a fitting, even if you decide not to buy anything there. I am very, very, VERY picky about bra-fittings (pre-pregnancy, I was a 32G in UK/EU sizes; now I'm up one band-size and two cup-sizes, whee), and Nordstrom's is one of the only places I trust not to screw it up.

Their selection of nursing bras is adequate (though the selection of 34Hs is not fantastic, nowhere's is), and their knowledge of how to fit a bra correctly is, if not unparallelled, certainly a high bar for anywhere else to try and meet, let alone beat.

After you've gotten a fitting, though, there're a fair few places to shop. Birth and Beyond has a decent selection, and I don't think any of the PPs have mentioned it yet. :) Also, there're a few good sites on the internet, too; my personal favourites are Figleaves and Bravissimo.

  • Sounds like you have lots of good options up north, but thought I'd throw this in for anybody in the south sound with a funny size.  Judy's intimate apparel in Tacoma does a great job fitting women with funny sizes - I went to four places, including nordstroms trying to find a 34H bra with no luck.  Judy's was able to help me and while my nursing bras are not gorgeous looking, they fit comfortably, do the job and hold the girls up where they should be!
  • Baby and Family Boutique at Evergreen!  They are fabulous!  3rd floor- take the elevators by the gift shop.
