Need help with lightweight jackets for the boys

I struggle with this every year.  In MI they almost need 3 different jackets; a winter jacket, something a little lighter for early spring/late fall, like a fleece jacket and then a lightweight windbreaker type jacket for late spring through early fall.  So I'm looking at a couple North Face jackets but not sure which style to go with.  I suppose I could buy one style and try to find the other a little cheaper.

These two are a little heavier/fleece

And this looks a more lightweight

  • What about the jackets that are 3-in-1...outer shell with removable fleece?  These have worked pretty well for me.

I looked at those, but for the price it seems like a waist since we dont need the winter part as they both have two winter jackets right now.

Very. This is what my DS has for a rain jacket. We live in NC and haven't really had a "winter" this year (60's last week), so he still wears this over his fleece when it rains. It's really lightweight, but a good rain jacket for spring/fall.

She's crafty - and she's just my type.
  • I bought DS a 2 in 1 from Landsend this year that is rated to -10 (and he will never be out when it's that cold).  I will be buying those for both kids from now on and only those (we're in MI too).  Fleece for fall/winter down to 40.  Both for winter and the shell for spring rainy days. they cost the same as what I'd pay for a fleece, winter and spring/rain jacket.

They call it a 3 in 1 and it is rated for -15, not -10.  The really nice thing about this jacket is that it is not bulky at all.

  • DD1 actually prefers to wear her winter jacket outside until it gets pretty warm. She wore it all of October and November. This year I ended up getting her a lighter weight jacket on sale at Lands End but it doesn't look like they have any boys versions left. This might be the closest. She's been wearing it lately since it's been in the 40s. Otherwise we usually just do sweatshirts for jackets.
