Our little boy made his appearance on his due date of 01/29/12 at 8:36pm weighing in at 9 lbs 10 oz. and 21.5 inches long.
The semi-long version of his birth story:
I went into labor on Saturday 1/28/12. I started monitoring my contractions at about 6pm when they were starting to get really uncomfortable. Labored at home until about midnight when my contractions were about 3 minutes apart. After arriving at hospital I found out I was only 4cm but that my contractions were strong and 2 1/2 minutes apart. Walked the hospital triage "walking path" for an hour to try and help progress but I was in so much discomfort from the pain that I could only walk for an hour. All of my labor was back labor and really quite painful. Moved upstairs to labor and delivery where I was checked again and at 8cm. At 9am they broke my water and I finally progressed to 10cm but was not quite 100% effaced. Stayed there for most of the day. My doctor asked if I would be willing to get an epidural to help me rest since I was exhausted and she needed me to be able to push. Consented to an epidural and a small dose of pitocin to see if it would help. By a little after 4pm I was ready to push and they turned to epidural off.
Pushed for over 3 hours but could not get the little guy to move past my pelvic bone. He kept hitting my pelvis and getting stuck. After 3 hours of zero progress from pushing and me completely exhausted, I developed a fever and I asked for an honest opinion on my ability to deliver my son vaginally. My doctor and I discussed my options and I consented to a c-section. As many of you know, this was one thing that I did NOT want to have happen but it turns out that it was the best decision that I could have made at the time. I was so tired that when they prepped me for surgery and gave me the anesthesia, I actually fell asleep on the operating table. My husband had to wake me up to tell me that we had a beautiful baby boy.
My doctor told me after that although I technically should have been able to eventually deliver my son vaginally that he would have just barely fit. His head was ever so slightly tilted to one side which prevented him from fitting through my pelvic bone. Considering how long I had been laboring and pushing though, I likely did not have enough strength left. He was born with bruising and scratching on his head and shoulders so I am ok with my decision to stop pushing and go for the c-section.
Because I had spiked a fever during labor my son had to go into a special nursery and be given antibiotics right after birth. He was only supposed to stay for an hour but his oxygen saturation level dipped while he was there and they ended up moving him to the NICU for the next 2 days. It was almost 24 hours after he was born that I was able to see him and hold him for the first time (I was able to see him for about 30sec right after he was born but was not able to hold him). He was perfectly fine the whole time he was in the NICU (and I think he was the biggest baby by far in our little wing). We went home together as planned on Wednesday.
Not exactly the birth story that I wanted to share but mom and baby are doing well and that is all that really matters to me. Best wishes to anyone still waiting on the arrival of their little one!
