Speech therapy thru the School District (WNY area)

My 3 yr old DS is just starting speech therapy through the school district. And I forgot to ask them after the evaluation if they do the services at our home or do we bring him somewhere... does anyone know? Also on average, how long did you child need the services for?

Thanks!

  • At your child's age, most likely someone will come to your home unless your child is enrolled in a day care.  Most providers work during school hours (8-3) so wherever your child is during that time, that's where services will be provided.

  • My oldest and middle son both have had speech therapy with the school district. This is not an at home service. Early intervention (0-3) would be. Most likely they will contact you regarding your schedule and their schedule at one of the local schools. My oldest met with the SLP 2x week for 30 mins at his future elementary school and my middle son needed more speech help, and he was admitted to the towns collaborative preschool where he gets pulled out for services 3x week.

  • From all the situations I personally know of, speech therapy through the school district is always done in the school. If you decide to go the route of hiring your own private speech therapist, then this can sometimes be done at your house.

  • When my ds started speech therapy at 2 yrs old i think he got it three times  a week at home, then when he went to preschool at 3 ,he still got it 3 times a week at home and twice a week in the classroom. He has a pretty severe speech delay though, now that he is in kindergarten he just receives it at school,5 times a week.

This has generally been our experience as well. At 2 when he initially qualified, he was still under the guise of EI, so we had a therapist come to our house once a week. At 3 (when he passed out of EI and got on an IEP through the district), we started taking him to a small group session in a local school. Then at 3.5, he started preschool in the district, where he continues to receive ST. If he had been bad enough (i.e. needing more significant help) when he turned 3, he would have skipped the small group session and entered the district preschool early to receive additional help.

I'd be surprised if they would send someone to your home, but I suppose each state/system is different.

  • at 3yo in my district a child who qualifies gets to go to early help preschool...  EI is done in the home- but is done by the state- not through the school district...at least where I am.

  • One of my sons had been getting PT, OT and feeding therapy (which is in a sense speech therapy, done by an SLP) through Early Intervention. He turned 3 last month and we thought he was going to get placed in a special needs preschool classroom and receive PT and OT there, since that's what the eval report said he qualified for. However, at his IEP meeting we found out they decided since he was on track in the speech and cognitive areas, that it wasn't the best placement for him and they wanted to provide services in his "natural environment" instead. Since I SAH, they send an itinerant teacher to our home for 1 hr/wk and he also gets a limited amount of PT and OT in our home (plus we continued with his therapists he'd been seeing through EI, and I'm really glad we did because so far it seems like he gets a lot more out of those).

Also, length of service varies. My oldest phased out in November after 3 yrs with the district (he did have an additional 2 yrs with EI). My middle son started last spring, and we already know that he will get services next year through our district, but we are moving and I am concerned about starting over again.

  • It will vary based on area but where I live, before age 3, they fall under an EI and they will come to you but once you turn 3, you fall under the Early Childhood Special Dept and the kids go to the school or in our area, to the schools community center where all the early childhood programs are run from.  In my area, they will bus the kids from home or daycare as long as it is within the district.
