Second time moms - how long was your labor ?

this question is prob asked so many times. I am anxious and really starting to get nervous. I am not a wimp by any means but I am def hoping I can handle this. I am just starting to get scared. I have never been in the hospital before for anything. I was just curious on others laboring times, maybe it will make me feel better that there will be an end in site

Re: Second time moms - how long was your labor ?

  • There is definitely end in sight! My water broke at around 6am, but I didn't start having contractions for a while, so by the time I got to the hospital it was about 10am. My DD was born at around 11pm.

  • I woke up to my first contraction at 130am (zero signs of upcoming labor until that point) and he was out at 907am :)  I called my MW at 430am since I was having 30-45 sec long ctx's every 5 mins

  • I started having irregular contractions mid-morning, was in active labor by about 10 at night and had my son at 7 am. The worst part was the 3 hour pushing, though the OB at L&D just told me my pelvic bone is the reason I pushed so long (and could do so again).
  • 30 hours from when my water broke (no contractions at the time)....they started pitocin about 11 hours after water breaking and kept increasing it until I requested an epidural, I started pushing but the epidural was too strong so they made me wait for it to wear off.... Total of 3 hours of pushing.

  • Water broke 2am. Couldn't feel DS moving so we were told to come to the hospital and were there about 3:20. No contractions so started pitocin around 6am. He was out at 10pm with 45 min of pushing. Had an epidural quite early since I was already on pitocin.

  • My water broke around 5 pm and DS was born at 5 am.  So about 13 hrs total and that includes 3 1/2 hrs of pushing.  DS was sunny side up and kept hitting my pelvic bone and bouncing back up.

  • it is nice that others chose an epidural. i am going to the hospital open minded but knowing myself in order to concentrate I might need it to take the edge off. thanks for sharing ladies

  • My water broke shortly before midnight, contrax began around 4am and DD was born at 3:18 pm after almost 40 minutes of pushing.

  • I was induced at 40 weeks 2 days.  I was already 3 cm/50-75% effaced, but he hadn't dropped much.

Anyway, the pit started at 12:30 pm, they broke my water at 2:30 pm, and DS arrived at 3:43 AM.  So ~15-16 hours on induction.

However, EVERY woman is different, and every labor is different.  I think the biggest thing is to just go with it...

  • went to hospital 4pm  water broke.  went on pitocin that night and had DD st 12 noon the next day.  I am planning on forgetting that labor.  :)
  • I was induced at 5pm on a friday night. Was told that I would not go into active labor until the following evening. My son was born at 3am on Saturday morning. Safe to say, they were wrong lol!

  • Of course like everything in pregnancy, it can vary greatly.

I went to the hospital around 8:30pm and was 3-4 cm.  They made me walk for a couple hours until I was a definite 4cm and her head was engaged.  By that point it was 11pm and I was in pain.  I ended up having her at 7:58am so I was in active labor for 9 hours.  This is pretty average for a labor.

  • I was contracting every 5-10 minutes for 6 days, but never progressed on my own.  From the time they started my induction DD was born 6 hours later with only 15-20 minutes of pushing.
  • 2pm- water broke (slow leak that I thought was pee)

6-7pm- back labor started, still wasn't sure I was in labor

11pm- pitocin started (only dilated to 2cm), got epi

    5am- 10cm, started pushing

    7:30am- DD was born.

So, about 15.5 hours, but it certainly wasn't hard work until the pushing because of the epi.

  • my contractions woke me from sleep around 2:30 in the morning.  they were very irregular.  in retrospect, i had probably been having contractions all evening but didn't notice. water broke around 4 or 4:30, small gush, got to the hospital about an hour later and was only 1cm dilated.  after a whole lot of monitoring and stuffy they called for the c/s (fetal distress) and DD was born around 10am.  i got to 5cm dilated.
  • 12:30am on April 6 - Went into labor with immediate painful contractions - only 1/2 centimeter dilated

    1pm - Only 1 cm dilated/ Got Epidural w/pitocin

    11:30pm - Started pushing

12:18am on April 7- My son was born after about 45 mins of pushing. (His hand was up on his head so that made it more difficult to push him out.)

So I'd say a good 24 hours of labor and that doesn't include the contractions I had the day before...

  • Wow, guess I am in the minority here. I was in painful active labor for 44 hours followed by just over 4 hours of pushing. Spent the first 24 hours at home unable to sleep, eat or do just about anything else then the rest of the time in the hospital.

  • I had my membranes swept Monday around noon and contractions started around 6pm. Labored at home all night.
Tuesday morning around 8:30am we got to the hospital.
DS was born Wednesday morning 12:40am after 3.5hrs of pushing.

  • I had an appt at 4 pm, and I was dilated to 5 cm so they kept me at the hospital.  I didn't really feel my contractions until they broke my water at 7 pm, and DS was born at 11:23 pm.  I pushed for 1.5 hours.

So in total of me actually feeling it, 4.5 hours

  • My first contraction was at 1am & I delivered at 5pm.... so 16 hours

edit:  I pushed for 20 minutes (but only during contractions)

  • Well, we had sex before going to bed. Then I had a contraction. (I hadn't had any until that point.) Every time I woke to pee I had another contraction.

When I woke up for the morning, I lost my MP and had bloody show. I was also continuing to have contractions. I spent the morning running errands (yes, knowing I was in early labor). I came home and had an early light lunch.

Contractions continued to get longer, stronger, and closer together. At 5 pm, I threw up (as I started heading into transition, most likely). This is when I would have headed to the hospital had I been birthing there. (We had a homebirth.)

I had my only internal at 7:30 pm when I demanded to be taken to the hospital for relief - at which point I was fully dilated. It was another hour or so before I really had an urge to push. I then pushed for 2 hours.

    J. was born around 11 pm. So that's about 24 hours after my first contraction. But really, it was only hard work for about 6-7 hours.

  • I started feeling mild contractions at home around 6 pm.  I stayed home and tried to rest until they got unbearable and I saw blood when I wiped, my water never broke.  We got to the hospital around midnight at which point I was about 5-6 cm dilated and got my epi as soon as the anesthesiologist could get to me.  Dr. broke my water when he got there.  I started pushing around 7 am and my son was born at 7:23 am.  All in all, about 13 hours.

  • I had mild contractions all day Monday but didn't pay attention to them because they didn't bother me at all- just thought they were BH's. When we got home from the mall it was about 9, I went to bed at 10:30 thinking "Man, if these keep up I might need to time them!". Didn't sleep and got out of bed at 11:30 to time them. By then they were getting hard to talk through, but not exactly painful. (Not as much as everyone had told me they'd be.) We arrived at L&D at 1am and I had my beautiful little man at 9:35 am after 20 minutes of pushing. :)

I would consider my labor 'active' for about 10-12 hours.

  • From the time my water broke to fully dilated was only 4 hours.  I pushed for almost 3 hours though then ended up with a c-section so I guess about 8 hours total.

I promise there is an end in sight!  Once you are in the moment, you really aren't thinking about how long it's been, you are just excited to see that baby :)  Good luck!
