An introduction and a GTKY

Hello everyone!

I'm moving to Minneapolis in a couple weeks and wanted to introduce myself!  I know some of you from TTGP and TTTC boards, but wanted to introduce myself to my NEW local board!  My husband and I have been married two years (our anniversary was this week!) and we currently live in Dallas, TX and are super excited about our next adventure in Minnesota!

Here's my GTKY:

- What's your favorite thing about living in Minneapolis/St. Paul (or whatever suburb you're in!)

- What's that one great restaurant that you take people to when they are visiting?

- What's your cold weather/winter activity?

     Welcome to MN!

    - What's your favorite thing about living in Minneapolis/St. Paul (or whatever suburb you're in!) Four seasons.  I love them all.

    - What's that one great restaurant that you take people to when they are visiting? I love the Day By Day Cafe in St. Paul.

    - What's your cold weather/winter activity? Hibernation...  I enjoy snow tubing at least once in the winter.

  • - What's your favorite thing about living in Minneapolis/St. Paul (or whatever suburb you're in!) I love that Minneapolis and area in general is very clean and safe.  I also love living near a lot of lakes and trails for biking or walking.  It's a very outdoorsy place.

    - What's that one great restaurant that you take people to when they are visiting?  I'll give you a couple.  Broder's Pasta Bar near Lake Harriet is great and they have a lunch counter across the street from their main restaurant.  Good Day Cafe has awesome breakfast.  Spasso in Minnetonka has amazing food, never had a bad meal there.  And Blue Point in Wayzata is great for seafood.  Sit in the bar for happy hour bar food and drinks.

    - What's your cold weather/winter activity? Snowshoeing and cuddling inside with a fire.

I moved to Minneapolis right out of college, I didn't grow up here.  I do love living here, but one thing I didn't realize or figure out right away is that people from Minneapolis are very nice and friendly on the surface but it has been very difficult to find a close group of friends.  I did meet a lot of people my age through work, but A LOT of people grow up here, go to school here and have a built-it network, and they don't often branch out to include other people.  Now this is my perception and been my experience and you might not find this to be the case for you.  I just want you to be aware of it.  Good luck with your move!

    - What's your favorite thing about living in Minneapolis/St. Paul (or whatever suburb you're in!)

I live in Northwest Minneapolis and my favorite thing is the sheer variety of fun, artsy activities. We are second only to NYC in the number of live theater seats and amount spent per capita on live theater. We have the second largest Fringe Festival in the US! I am also a Big Geek (comic books, video games, etc) and this city is huge for that sort of interest. We have one of the largest fan-run sci-fi/fantasy conventions in the US and several others to boot.

    - What's that one great restaurant that you take people to when they are visiting?

I usually suggest two that are within walking distance of my house. Travail Kitchen and Amusements was named one of the top 10 new restaurants in the country last year in Bon Appetit magazine. Victory 44 is very highly rated on the Zagat survey. Both are very reasonably priced and casual atmosphere for amazing food. If my visitor is more fun or whimsical, I take them to Psycho Suzi's Motor Lounge and Tiki Bar, which is super fun and has, imho, the best pizza in the twin cities.

    - What's your cold weather/winter activity?

Huddling in the house in front of a fireplace! I'm a wimp.

  • - What's your favorite thing about living in Minneapolis/St. Paul (or whatever suburb you're in!)

I found it very easy to make new friends once we moved here. (Originally from PA.)

    - What's that one great restaurant that you take people to when they are visiting?

We have two restaurants that we like to take people to when they are visiting. Ike's in Minneapolis has a great brunch on the weekends (and I love the scrambled eggs with cream cheese...delicious!), and Brasa in Minneapolis (their food is all delicious).

    - What's your cold weather/winter activity?

I go to the Mall of America a lot on Tuesdays (I have a toddler and we go to Toddler Tuesdays.) and walk around. It allows me to get out and walk without having to be outside when it gets really cold (like today).

  • - What's your favorite thing about living in Minneapolis/St. Paul (or whatever suburb you're in!)We live a few blocks from Como Zoo and I'm always in awe at the beauty of such a huge park and attractions right within the city.  - What's that one great restaurant that you take people to when they are visiting?A few ideas.  For Mexican/lowkey, I LOVE Pancho Villa on Nicollet in s. Mpls.  For something a little nicer, I enjoy Christos in downtown St. Paul.  For a special occasion, Pazzaluna in downtown St. Paul gets high marks from me.  For fun outside, I like Maynards in Minnetonka or anywhere in Stillwater. - What's your cold weather/winter activity?   Ugh. Shoveling my driveway?  I suppose just enjoying the snow in the morning when it's beautiful and fresh on the trees...that and dreaming of spring!

    - What's your favorite thing about living in Minneapolis/St. Paul (or whatever suburb you're in!) I love living in Eagan because it is a pretty new/developed city. It is a quieter subarb but still close enough to everything you need. The one thing I love the most about Minnesota in general is Hockey, I am a huge Hockey fan! :)

    - What's that one great restaurant that you take people to when they are visiting? Redstone in Eden Prairie is to die for, kind of spendy, but worth it. A more local bar and grill is Carbone's in Apple Valley, they have awesome pizza, pasta and hoagies. Really fun atmosphere too!

    - What's your cold weather/winter activity? HOCKEY! If I am not skating, I am at least watching hockey on TV :)

  • - What's your favorite thing about living in Minneapolis/St. Paul (or whatever suburb you're in!) I love the change of seasons (although tend to complain when it's too cold). We have a boat, so living around some many lakes and living a block from the Mississippi is wonderful!

    - What's that one great restaurant that you take people to when they are visiting? I love Psycho Suzies for the fun atmosphere, awesome pizza and unique drinks. I also love the Old Spaghetti Factory on Washington Ave downtown, and Annie's Parlour in Dinkytown at the U of M (where I went to college and grad school).

    - What's your cold weather/winter activity? I am a downhill skiier...although not this year! :) Sledding/tubing is also a lot of fun.

SO funny you mentioned that!  I've heard that several times about MN. I wonder why??  Well I guess that means I'll have to befriend other newcomers or find a friend group to just adopt me into their group!  Thanks for all the great recommendations everyone!!

Hockey!!! I'm a huge hockey fan!

    - What's that one great restaurant that you take people to when they are visiting?

There are so many great ones! I love Muffuletta in St. Paul, DiGiteos (Sp?) on W 7th in St. Paul (great family run Italian place), Snuffy's Malt Shop (great for burgers and malts), and Bin Wine Bar DT St. Paul (very low key and relaxed atmosphere)

    - What's your cold weather/winter activity?

Spending cold snowy afternoons inside making homemade soup, going to hockey games, or going to Afton State Park (we host an annual family "winter picnic" there)
