Nurseries and Baby Gear

What's on your nursery window??

Hi ladies,

What have you found to work best as a window covering in your nursery? Is it really necessary to get the room pitch dark... and if so, what have you done it with?

Right now we have some white, decorative curtains from Ikea on the window, but now I'm after the more practical blind, shade... or whatever you recommend!

TIA!

  • I'm interested in responses to this as well. We currently have blinds, but that's pre-nursery set up. I just cannot decide what we should do window wise. I was considering curtains over the blinds, but would like to hear other options/opinions/etc.

  • me too! Baby is sleeping in our bedroom and it is DARK.  Her room is upstairs with nothing but vertical blinds..hmmm

  • All of our bedrooms have faux wood blinds, and blackout curtains, including the nursery.  In the beginning it didn't seem like a big deal, and you want baby to sleep in all light situations, but come summer time our rooms are way to bright and hot from the heat for naps and early bedtimes.

  • We just have blinds & a valance. Room gets dark fir night time sleeping. He's not a big mapper during the day. Not sure if blackout would solve the issue but I really don't want him to only be able to sleep in very dark environment.

  • We have mini blinds that are always up and a pink curtain.  It doesn't black out the room.  DD#1 never had an issue with sleeping so I didn't worry about making her room dark.

  • One window has wood blinds.  The other two smaller windows don't have anything.  Her room is nowhere near pitch black and she sleeps just fine.  I purposely didn't make it pitch black because I knew I wouldn't be able to control that when we traveled other places, and I didn't want her to not be able to sleep if it wasn't pitch dark.  So, during the day when she naps (and in the summer when she goes down for the night) it is pretty darn light in there.  And she sleeps past sunrise in the morning (usually until 8:30, but sometimes even later).

  • we have Levolor (sp?) cellular blinds we got at lowes in all our windows. they work like a pull down shade. we had them cut to fit perfect in each window, they also are insulated so they keep the cold out in the winter.  in the nursery we just have a valence over the top of the window to hide the blinds when they are all the way up and to let in optimal sunlight during the day

  • We have cellular blinds in DS's room with just window valances that match his bedding. The cellular blinds really do help him sleep better by blocking out the light and filtering noise. He has never been a good napper, so these seem to help. We are doing just regular blinds at first in the baby's room, and if he has trouble sleeping as well, we may get cellular blinds for him too. We are doing fabric-covered window cornices as well above the blinds. Like this: https://www.chiccheapnursery.com/2010/do-it-yourself/diy-how-to-make-a-window-cornice/

  • We have a Roman shade for our window treatment. I Luke the look of a Roman shade vs blinds. Many people said not to worry about it being room darkening. It's good for baby to distinguish day and night and for baby to be able to sleep in some light. Like if you go out to run errands baby can sleep easily in any light. We keep our shade up during the day to let light in and LO sleeps well.

  • We have plantation shutters in the nursery. They make the room darker than blinds but still let in some light so it's not pitch black.

  • plantation shutters...no cords and room darkening.
  • We have cordless blinds & "black-out" curtains (the curtains are yellow so they don't really black-put the room but they do help a lot.

We bought both at JCP but didn't find out until afterwards that we could have gotten black-out cordless blinds cheaper at Lowes.

  • Blackout honeycomb shades with cute Land Of Nod sheer curtains over them.  We keep the sheer panels closed all the time for privacy and close the blackout shades at bedtime.

  • We have faux wood blinds (but that was done before baby) in all the rooms.

Both kids rooms get some pretty good sun at different times of day, so both have curtains.  #1's curtains are not black out because they are a darker fabric.  #2's room gets the worst sun in the afternoon and the curtains were light so I lined them with blackout fabric.
