Hip Pain when Sleeping.....

Since I've been sleeping on my sides I wake up in the middle of the night with my hips in pain! Aching so bad. I hate sleeping on my sides, but now don't feel comfortable on my back (or stomach obviously). I flip from side to side but my hips just ache all night long... Any advice? I've tried a pillow between my legs but it doesn't seem to help. Maybe a body pillow? TIA!

Re: Hip Pain when Sleeping.....

  • I use a body pillow and it helps (not tremendously, but it does provide some relief).  I also found that sleeping with two pillows under my head helps - I guess the angle of my body lessens the pressure on my hips?  I don't know if there is anything that will completely take the pain away, though.  It's a combo of our hips getting ready to give birth and having to sleep our side all the time.

  • I have the same problem, and I just started sleeping with a body pillow, so we'll see how it works. My current bed is also so old that you can trace the springs with your finger tip, so it'll probably be more beneficial to you. Another thing that I hear helps when you're uncomfortable when you're sleeping is to get up and stretch out a little. A little inconvinent, but it might make sleeping on your back comfortable again.
  • Mine hurt so bad with DD and they hurt now too. I think it's a combo of the hormones that loosen up yours hips to allow for birth and only sleeping on ur sides when ur not used to it. I use a body pillow body but it doesn't help. The only way I find relief is light exercise throughout the day (walking, swimming, etc) and every stretchy and evening I make it a habit to stretch out. I roll onto the floor and just make myself do it. It's annoying but it does help!

  • I have the exact same problem.  I tried to double up on the pillows between my legs but couldn't sleep like that, and when they started bothering me last night I bunched up the comforter between my knees and that helped (until I got cold and had to cover up again!) I might try a body pillow but I don't see it being much different.

  • Look up sciatica it may be your sciatic nerve, I have it and it sucks to sleep at night. Many pregnant women get it but don't realize this is what it is...

  • I have chronic hip pain in my left hip (I've had it since I was 15) and when I'm pregnant sleep is nearly impossible sometimes. I've found the only thing that helps is arranging my pillows into a sort of mini-mattress pad so that my hip area is the only area that is actually on the mattress, if that makes sense. I also have to put a couple pillows between my legs. It takes off some of the stress on your hips. Also, as pp's said, definitely stretching. I do prenatal yoga and it helps a ton. If it's really, really bad, I'll take a Tylenol or a Tylenol PM before going to bed.
