3rd Trimester

Gaining too much weight...

I feel like I have been gaining a crazy amount of weight lately! Like 6 lbs in 3 weeks! Is this normal for the 3rd tri? I have been abnormally hungry, but have not been eating like a whole pie or anything - when I snack I try to eat veggies! Is there even anything to be done (aside from stay away from pie, et al) to try to moderate this. I know I will be gaining more weight, but this is seeming excessive!

Re: Gaining too much weight...

  • look at it this way:
after 30 weeks or so the baby is gaining a 1/2 pound a week, so you should gain at least that much.

sorry, I don't know how to make this a link.  if you copy and paste it, then that should work.  I use the link to help me judge how much weight should be gained, and help me feel like I am staying on track.

Beware of people who tell you it is ok cuz they gained some large number of pounds during pregnancy....the bigger question is did they lose it all, how much hard work did that take, and how they felt about their body postpartum.

And if you feel like you are eating very well and still gaining more than you expect, then some good old exercise is good.  Even if you don't change the weight that you are gaining you will feel better after a walk/workout/whatever.

  • thanks for posting that - I had no idea that we were supposed to gain so much so fast at the end of the 2nd/start of the 3rd tri. Looks like I am in the normal range, but old habits die hard, esp when you see you gained almost a pound in 5 days!

Btw - I do 30 min walking/elliptical workouts three times a week and have a fairly active job. I would try to do it more, but the next days my hips are killing me!

I think my main problem is the people at work - they keep bringing in food and being all "you can have 3 helpings - you are pregnant!". annoying.

I have had a few weeks in this third trimester where I've gained two pounds.  And, yes, I have unfortunately gained more than the recommended amount (I'm up 45 pounds at 39 weeks).   While I didn't track my weight during my last pregnancy, I know that I gained more because my cheeks, arms, and butt all looked a little bit squishier last time than they do this time (so I'm guessing I was up about 50-55 pounds last time).

And, to answer the bigger questions, I lost it all within 6 months (could have been less, but I wasn't watching it) with very little effort aside from returning to my old eating habits and going out for walks with my DD.  And I felt about as good about my PP body as I did about it before.

Am I upset that I've gained more than the "maximum" recommendation of 35?  Absolutely.  Am I worried that it's unhealthy?  No, because I've been doing everything I can to keep my weight-gain at a minimum and I'm still gaining this much.  Am I worried that I won't be able to lose it afterwards?  With a toddler and infant around... absolutely not.

  • FTM that hasn't gone over the recommended weight gain amount yet, so take it for what's its worth, but there was a two week period (I think from 32-34 weeks) that I gained 6 pounds, then at my next appt a week later I was down 2 pounds, then I went back up a pound and have so far hovered right there gaining and losing that same pound.  So it's possible that you could have a big weight gain then not much else.

  • I gained 10 pounds in a two-week period once when I was pregnant with my son. I gained 27 pounds in all.

  • Sometimes at the end you start to retain lots of water which adds weight quickly.  My first I had a ton of water weight that fell off after the baby came.  Keep up with your veggies and try to avoid all salt.  Also try to drink even more water and see if it helps.

  • I gained about 40 lbs with my first and I was back down to normal size withing 6 weeks (only did some mild walking to get back down to size) this time I am on track to gain more!! Makes me really mad but I eat as healthy as I can (minus my cravings of pinto bean burritos!!). I have a very active job where I am on my feet walking around for 8 hours a day and really don't get breaks (I work in a bakery) I also have a 2 year old that I chase around all day. I really don't know where I am carrying all of the weight because I still fit into my size 6 jeans that I wore before I got pregnant, besides the fact that the button won't button cause it digs into my belly. Really as long as you are eating healthy and exercising and you feel healthy then however much you gain is fine (that is my opinion and the opinion that my Dr. gave me).

Maybe this is just my pregnant self but I don't care that i have gained a bunch of weight. Maybe this is just the way I was raised but I have pretty high self esteem and weight does not make the person. I may be covered in stretch marks and have extra largge love handles but I still feel rather good about myself. If i  don't lose it in the first year that is okay. i am a fairly active person and I am happy being jsut who i am.

  • I feel ya! I gained 4lbs in 2 weeks! I honestly think it may have been their scale though.  I haven't changed my diet at all! AH!!!!!!

  • I'm in the same boat! Just hit my 38 mark and I'm close to that 35 lb rule!!!  I will go to the doc confident that I ate "fairly" well...step on the scale and...yep, another pound!  oh well...what can you do?  Every body is differnt.   I keep reminding myself that the most important thing is to have the baby healthy...I'll deal with the weight later ;)
  • Also remember that some people just gain more than others!  I put on 50 pounds with my first 2, and am on track to do it again with my 3rd. (33 weeks now).  I am very careful about what I eat, watch my salt intake, exercise daily (besides for running around after 2 children already!) and I still gain like crazy.  I have just realized that my body holds on to every single calorie when I'm pregnant!  I will say that it all comes off by 3 months post partum, so I am not too concerned this time.  ;)
