bf mommas: do you drink?

Sooooo, I've been wanting to have a drink or 2. I don't like beer or wine, but really like the flavored mikes hard lemonade. I'd like to have 1, maybe 2 tonight, but am very concerned about LO since I'm ebf. So, if you bf, do you drink, and then nurse or do you dump? if you nurse, do you notice any difference in your LO?

Re: bf mommas: do you drink?

  • Yes. I rarely have more than one drink and if it is just one I feed normally. Alcohol spikes an hour and a half after drinking so I try to feed accordingly. Kellymom.com has some great info about BF and drinking.

  • I BF & I drink. And occasionally, it's a bit more than 1 or 2 hard lemonades ;). Here's the Kellymom drinking while BFing timetable: https://www.beststart.org/resources/alc_reduction/pdf/brstfd_alc_deskref_eng.pdf

I don't drink, but our LC said to wait at least 2 hours/drink before you BF and to pump and dump.

You don't need to pump and dump.  If you are sober enough to drive, you can breastfeed.  I usually have a glass of wine while nursing, so by the time LO is ready to eat again, the alcohol is out of my system.

This is true, and what I followed with dd. but I waited until she was 3 months old for her liver to be more developed. Before that I either dump or time it well to make sure it is out of my system.

  • I have twice and either waited until LOwas down for her first long stretch of sleep or gave her a bottle out of my stash.
  • I've had a glass of wine and BF normally. I haven't really had more than that (I'm so exhausted I can't imagine adding a hangover to that!). Amazon sells breastmilk test strips if you are really worried about it. I've never used them but a few of my friends have and they like them

  • Having a beer as we speak... like PP said, if you can drive, you're fine. Use caution and always have a bottle in the fridge if you're pumping and concerned about the alcohol being in your system. Have fun! You're still a normal person and allowed to drink, no need to pump and dump, that does nothing for the alcohol being in your system

  • I rarely drink. If I do I only have 1 and wait 2 hours. Check out this chart...

  • Yes, I occasionally have a glass of wine.  I pour it right after she goes to bed at 8, and now that she's sttn, I don't worry about it.

  • I don't drink... Lo won't take a bottle and she feeds too often

  • I don't, just because it makes me feel unreasonably guilty, and cutting out alcohol is no big deal. I don't drink caffeine for the same reason.

  • I will be next weekend and can't wait! It has been a long 10 months! :)

  • I'm not BFing anymore, but I drank.  I didn't actually nurse after I'd been out with friends, I just waited until the AM when the buzz wore off.  I never actually pumped and dumped; I pumped right before I went out and then nursed in the AM.  As alcohol leaves your bloodstream it also leaves your BM.
  • i haven't had a drink yet, but for no real reason.

DD doesn't nurse after 5pm anymore (she gets a bottle of pumped milk around 7) so theoretically I could now because she's not up until 3am.

  • I've had a drink here and there, but it's usually right after she's eaten. The only time I DRANK drank, was on NYE and I made sure she had sufficient backup milk at home where my mom was watching her for a few hours so we could have a night to ourselves. I had 4 drinks maybe. I pumped once while I was out (we were at a good friend's house) just so it didn't affect my supply and just dumped it out (which was kind of devastating, regardless of alcohol content). My LO only woke up once that night so I just gave her a bottle instead of BFing her. In the morning I used an alcohol test strip, which said I was clear, and began BFing her again.

  • you do NOT have to pump and dump unless you're more than tipsy. i was told by many nurses and LCs that pumping and dumping is unnecessary unless you feel more than tipsy. i have never noticed anything different after i have some wine and my son eats. ever.

i drink twice a month when i go out and i have 2-3 glasses of wine tops.

This, I will have a drink while DH is giving her her evening pumped bottle, she usually goes 4 hours between feedings at night, so that's even longer than the hour and a half it takes to get out of your system.  I wouldn't say I do this often (3 times total) but I love my wine!

  • My LC said it was impossible to turn your milk into an alcoholic beverage.  I am still confused as to exactly what she meant by this.  I can't see having a bottle of wine and nursing being ok.
