Dummy XP: Book recommendations -- pregnancy & childbirth

I tried to post this here and didn't realize I was on the TTGP board at the time...so this is technically a XP!  Not that I don't value the knowledge of the TTGPers, but there are SO. MANY of them and most haven't been pregnant.  I was really seeking the opinions of my smaller, more familiar group of LGBTers.

I have a B&N gift certificate burning a hole in my pocket.  It occurs to me that since I read books on conception when I was preparing to TTC, I might as well read books on pregnancy and childbirth while I'm TTC.  I like to be prepared. :)  Will you recommend your favorite pregnancy and childbirth books?  I'm not inclined to buy What to Expect since it seems to have terrible online reviews (and I've never been able to get over that horrible cover -- I know, I know, but it's SO. UGLY).  I bought The Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy as an alternative.  It's dull but not useless.

Pregnancy and childbirth are kind of universal, so I don't know that there are LGBT-specific books on these topics (I've read Brill and Pepper, but I think they're more useful for pre-conception/conception), but LGBT-friendly is good, if that makes sense (in other words, bonus points for books that don't assume everyone is a straight lady with a husband).

TIA! Happy Friday!

  • "The Birth Partner" by Penny Simkin was a big hit with my friend and her husband - it gave him something to read and concrete ways he could help with the birth.  It's inclusive too, not just hetero focused.
Same sex couple TTC with donor sperm.  I am 35 and carrying.  Endometriosis and DOR.
    AMH 0.5, AFC 5-8, FSH 7ish

IVF #1 - antagonist.  Empty follicle syndrome.  1 retrieved, 0 fertilized.
    IVF #2 - antagonist.  Ovulated early.  3 retrieved, 2 fertilized, 0 blasts
  • I am personally in love with the parenting book, Superbaby by Dr. Jenn Berman.  I quote it every single day to my wife.  It's made me feel a little less overwhelmed and a lot more knowledgable as we prepare for little one...

For pregnancy, we just keep re-checking out Pregnancy Day by Day from the library, so I'm not much help there, but we do like it...don't refer to it as much now, but found it very helpful, exciting, and reassuring during the first trimester.

    :)
