Blocked tear ducts, yucky belly button, and a hernia...

My poor DS! I hate seeing him so breakable!

He has blocked tear ducts that we clean so often I hate it! It looks so uncomfortable!

His umbilical cord freaks me out and I am so scared it is going to fall off prematurely. It is hanging there but doesnt look healed underneath. I am scared something is going to happen this weekend when the doctors office is closed.

Also he has a hernia near his groin on the left leg. Apparently this is relatively common in boys, but doesn't make me feel any better about it. There is nothing they can do about it until 6 months old if it doesn't go away on its own (it usually doesn't). It requires SURGERY! Omg! I didnt want to hear that!

I hate worrying so much about my little Liam! I guess that is motherhood and if it wasn't these things it would be something else...

  • If you're bf'ing, put a few drops of breastmilk in his eyes. It'll help with the clogged ducts - it cures pink eye too!
It's not uncommon to have a little bleeding after the cord stump falls off. Just keep the area clean with a little warm water on a wash cloth. You can use a little rubbing alcohol once or twice a day too. Every once in a while it might bleed enough that the pedi has to treat it with silver nitrate, but that's not super common.
Sorry to hear about his hernia. I hope it ends up healing on its own!

  • DD's belly button kept bleeding and the doctor just put a little silver nitrate on it about a week or so after her stump fell off.  It looked SO much better after that and we haven't had any issues since then.

Agreed to all of this!  LO had a clogged tear duct a week ago.  I had always heard breastmilk helps and read it all over the internet.  I figured there must be some truth to it with how much I'd read that.  My other options were to call the pedi and get an ointment or let it clear up on its own (could take months).  So last Saturday I squirted a small bit of breastmilk while feeding him.  Didn't wipe it out, just let it sit there while he dozed at the breast.  It cleared up in less than 24 hours.  Seriously, breast milk is amazing.

The stump should be falling off right about now so don't worry about it.  Once it falls off it will look "unhealed" underneath for maybe another week or so but it will heal up in time.  Agreed with pp that there will be some bleeding around the time it falls off.

    Hang in there mama!
