Holy cow! Preschool cost

I just looked into Woodbury at SNMOP.....it is over TWICE the cost of the preschool we are a waiting list for! We are #2 so we have a good shot, but I wanted a back up plan. I thought, hey SNMOP isn't too far....oh but heck no. We could never afford that!

Maybe I am up for a big surprise as this kiddo gets bigger, but I sure had sticker shock when I looked at that price!

  • Dare I ask what the average cost is? We haven't looked that far into it yet.

Average? IDK....the 2 I am looking at are the same price here on the West side. $750 for 2 day per week (2.5 hr a day).

The one I like in Pittsford was $1100 for the same time, and Woodbury is $1750 for the same times! I nearly spit out my drink.

  • Ya I know! Parkminster is 6-something
  • yeeeeahh. Eve's preschool is 4x as much as the preschool around the corner from my house (but she will go twice as much time) and about 3x as much as the ymca preschool.. but I think to some extent we are getting what we pay for.as far as her actually learning things and doing well.. I toured the YMCA preschool and another traditional preschool last year before we decided on montessori.. the one was OK, but I was not impressed at all with the Y one.. Eve would NOT do well there.  I don't really know what my point is.. but if it is any way in your budget, I might at least do a tour of the place.

$750 per month?? Good lord I hope not!

  • Eves will be $2700 for the year but she will go 4 days per week, 2.5 hours a day.  If she went 5 days it would be $3150 for the year. Its a lot.. but since it is more days.. I don't think it is quite AS outrageous.. We actually pay more per day/hour right now with her in the toddler program.. which I think is a little silly.

I wanted to like Parkminster....but we went there for their indoor garage sale last summer and the building stunk! I couldn't get past the musty smell in the Fellowship hall. I also get disturbed by some of the sayings they put on their sign out front. IDK, I should tour them since they are so close.

Oh no! It is for the school year....sept-may/june

  • Oh thank god! I was about to google homeschooling for preschoolers! :-)

  • I really hope that's $750 total, right? We do $2000 for 3 half days a week.

I'm looking into preschools in Colorado, and some of them are ridiculously expensive. The most expensive one I found was a fancy Montessori school- it's $9000 for 5 half days a week. I think college was that much for me!

Oh, we hadn't gone to tour it bc we got in to Pearce. Our neighbor is happy there, but I haven't actually been since doing their summer camp as a kid myself.

  • J's here is $80 per month for 2 days, 2 1/2 hrs each. it's not that bad but then I think about the twins. Inflation + the cost x2= yuck.

  • Broken down to a monthly or weekly cost it doesn't seem so horrible, but it's preschool.....most are play based (which I like). All of our 3's programs are 2 days per week, so 5 hours a week makes the cost seem high. Obviously it is far less than daycare but so are the hours. I don't want him there for more than 2 days this year and 3 days next year.....when he starts K it will be full days. That will be hard to swallow and I just might think about moving districts to avoid this!
  • Wait aren't you in my district? Gates is half days K. CC is full day

We are in GC, they just passed full day K and it will be by the time R is in K (2014)

  • I'm totally not looking forward to this!  I wish I lived in a district that had UPK!

  • Last year we looked at Woodbury, the one at the science museum and EBNS (where Eva is)- the price difference was crazy.  Cobblestone and Harley are both over 10K/year- I cannot even fathom shelling out that much for preschool!

Oh wow, I hadn't heard that! as far as I know, gates was the only one on the west side that was half day. And I think there is only 1 or 2 on the east side that are half day - Webster maybe?

They just passed full day k in our district too (Penfield) - it seems too long for them!

  • Sometimes full day K isn't always full day - it's like 9-1 instead of 9-3 or whatever. Evan does 9-1 right now and he would love to stay longer!! Haha..

  • We are currently trying to figure out where we are going to send Reed next year.  He currently goes to a cooperative Pre-k in OP.  He has loved it and I don't have any major complaints.  I guess my main one is that I am a non-participating parent (since I work 2 days per week and have Pierce and noone to watch him). I pay a premium ($200 more for the year so $1,100 total).  They hire a sub on the days I would be scheduled.  Reed has started to notice and ask why I don't stay like the other mommies.  Anyway, it is play based and he likes it a lot.

That said, we toured Nativity last night and we really liked it. It is more academic which I think he would do really well with.  He follows directions really well and generally likes to complete tasks and be taught, etc.  The thing we loved is that they have specials just like you would as you got bigger so he would get to go to music class, art, gym, and computer class.  My biggest hesitation is that it is 5 days per week from 8:30-12:20.  It seems like a long time!  They eat luch there too in this cute section of the cafeteria called the pre-k cafe.  It is $2,200 for the year if you are a parishoner, which we are.  The co-op would be 3 days/wk for him as a 4 yr. old for 2.5 hours per day and it costs $1,800.  Considering how much time they are there and the different learning opportunities, it seems like Nativity is a "better deal".  I also love that they get a religious foundation and he could get some exposure to our faith.  I am so torn!

  • Wow!  makes me grateful that our school district has pre-k from 1 year old on up, and it is free for residents.  They did say that there is a waiting list, so hopefully we get in.  If not, I may just wait until he is 4 and have him take classes at the Y.
