Hi All,
I had my first RE appt on Wednesday (my 34th birthday) - I'm pretty excited to get things moving! He thinks that with my regular cycle and overall health that I should try a couple of cycles with no medications. We're planning on getting started in the spring, so he did a rubella and CMV immunity test (does anyone know much about CMV?) and we'll head back there in April-ish to get started.
He has me tracking my cycle with an ovulation kit to confirm that my ovulation is 'predictable' - is this typical?
I've shortlisted some potential donors and I'm literally chomping at the bit to get this going! ![]()
Re: First RE Appt
How exciting and happy birthday!
Tracking between now and then definitely is typical and logical. If I were you I'd temp/pay attention to cervical mucus/etc. too. If you're going unmedicated you want to have some idea that you do actually ovulate and that you can read the signs to know when it is.
If you're CMV+ it doesn't matter. If you're CMV- you may want to narrow your donor choices to CMV- donors, as there is a small risk of serious complications. My philosophy was why risk it, but it's a relatively new thing to pay attention to and some people believe the risk is so low it doesn't matter.
Good luck with donor selection, it's tough. Be sure to pay attention to whether your top choices are actually currently in stock - some banks are better than others about informing you about this online.

Cautiously optimistic.
Thank you Kershnic, for the advice and b-day wishes
I have found a chart that will help me to track all of those things, so I'll start today!
I think I agree with you on the CMV, if its something that you can avoid, that's a good thing. My partner is latina, so we want to have a latino donor, however the options are really limited for some reason. I'll go and see what the donors at our cryobank (Fairfax) look like in terms of CMV. There were only about 5 to choose from last time I looked.
What kershnic said about CMV.
Have you read Taking Charge of Your Fertility? I think the cycle-tracking described there is waaaaay more useful and dependable than just ovulation kits, especially when used WITH ovulation kits. Ovulation kits can tell you you're gearing up to ovulate but cannot confirm that you did ovulate (your body can gear up to ovulate and then not ovulate). A rise in basal body temperature can confirm that you ovulated -- or at least provide more confirmation than the kits. Temping/charting isn't for everyone, but I have found it very helpful and informative.
