recommend your car seat/booster for 4 year old

My four year old is small, not close to the 40 lb limit to move to a booster yet, but we need to start thinking about a new car seat with the new baby arriving. Right now BRU is having their trade in event, so we were thinking of getting her one (trading in the old/expired carseat from my hubby's car).

I'm leaning towards getting one of those 5 point harness car seats that convert into a high back booster like Britax Frontier.

We tried out the Graco Nautilus, but the crotch strap has already been outgrown by her, so that's a no go.

Any recommendations on ones you love and why, would be appreciated! Thanks!

  • we have sunshine radian 80s... they go up to 80lbs.  My son is almost 5 and is about 50lbs (which is very big for his age) so the Radian should be good for a couple more years and will keep him in a 5-pt harness which is safest.
I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • My DH and I both now have Britax Frontiers in our cars.  I think the Frontier is a great seat and have no complaints about it.  My DD is also no where near 40 lbs and short so between the 5 point harness and booster options I figure we will definitely get our money's worth out of it.

  • Another vote for the Frontier. We're about to buy a 2nd one for DD2 because she's about to outgrow the Roundabout. We decided to go w/ the frontier because is has some of the highest height limits on the market and both my girls are super tall. Plus, loved the arm rests and cup holders ;)

  • I would recommend either a britax frontier, recaro  prosport or evenflo maestro. All have tall top harness slots and will convert to boosters later. I love the radians, which my kids are in, but they are convertible seats and you're paying for the fact that they can be used rear facing and forward facing. No point in paying for a rear facing seat if you aren't using it. Most kids outgrow them for height long before hitting the weight limit anyway (my 4 year old is tall and all torso and has outgrown the radian). A seat is outgrown for height either when the tops of the ears hit the top of the shell or when the shoulders go above the tops harness slots (whichever happens first). Diono/Sunshine Kids is the only company that allows use once the shoulders are above the top slots, but since even an adult seatbelt is not allowed to be used that way I'm not comfortable doing so. The new models of radian do become boosters, but are often outgrown for height (tops of ears at the top of the shell) before hitting the weight minimum of 50 lbs for use in booster mode. They also aren't a long-lasting booster because the headrest doesn't move up, so it's outgrown for height in booster mode at the same time as when it's outgrown for harness height.

  • We have the Evenflo Symphony 65. It harnesses to 65 lbs and is a booster to 100 lbs. We love the quick-connectors it has for LATCH (super easy to install and tighten) and the sliding shoulder straps. DD is on the big side for her age and she's very comfortable in it.

  • I'm glad you asked this. We want to buy back-up seats for DH's car (finally!) and since our boys are now FFing I was thinking about getting seats that start as 5-pt harnessed seats and convert to boosters later. (Our main seats are First Years TrueFits which should also last them several more years.)

Love our Frontier. We didn't buy Britax for the infant or convertible because of how expensive they were but I'm so glad we got the Frontier combination booster. LOVE it and I think it's the only booster that allows a child to go up to age 5 in a 5 point harness. Safety and comfort were my main priority. I wanted my child to want to be in his car seat and he loves the thing!

I know 6 year olds that are harnessed in Nautilus seats, and my DD will probably be 6 and harnessed in her ProSport. The Frontier is awesome, but I like that the Recaro becomes a backless booster as well.

We will likely move DS to one eventually as well.

  • My two girls, who are four and six have three seats each.

My four year old, rides in a Recaro Prosport in my truck, a Frontier 85 in my DH's truck, and when we fly, and we have flown 6 times since December 22, she has a Evenflo Maestro.  It has a lower harness weight then the others, but it is light, and comfy for her.  My six year old has the same seats, other than instead of a Maestro as her travel seat, she is boostered when we travel.  We just moved in September, and before we moved our girls road in Graco Nautilu's and I absolutely would not recommend, I hated them with a passion.   I should say that my six year old is 45 pounds, stands 43 inches tall, with a fourteen inch torso.  My four year old is tiny, she is 33 pounds, 37 inches tall, and with a fourteen inch torso.
