Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Doc said STOP Breastfeeding!

I'm not very happy with my pedi. I told him that DS was not into eating solids and his relpy was, "well you might just have to stop BF so that he has no choice but to eat solids." I think the look on my face told him what I was thinking.

So...now I'm looking for a new doc for my little man. What an a$$ of my doc.

And yes my DS is growing and healthy!!!! ;)

Re: Doc said STOP Breastfeeding!

  • My baby did the same thing at 6mo, she didn't decide that she liked to eat solids until around 8mo, my pedi said that especially for BF babies its not uncommon and lots of BF babies don't like purees and would much prefer table food

  • Ya, that is odd. Solids shouldn't become a priority until DC is 12 months old...not 6...weird.

Sometimes you just have to go with what YOU think is best.

  • that sounds odd to me, considering the recommendation to breastfeed for at least a year.
  • OMG, that is absolutely ridiculous. Yes, you need to find a new pediatrician. Preferably one who knows what they're talking about.
  • That's dumb.  At 6mos babies don't "need" solids, they need mainly BM or formula.  Kate barely ate any solids until 9mos.
  • WHAT!!!  I would be flabbergasted if my pedi told me that (partially because she's also a lactation consultant).  BM or formula is all a baby needs in their first year of life.  Giving them any solids is just for fun and to teach them about different textures/tastes.  I think you are right to find a new doctor - simply because he should know that a baby doesn't NEED solids right now.  My advice - keep offering a little here and there.  Your baby will decide he likes solids soon enough.

So, if you don't mind me asking, what do you recommend to parents who are having a hard time getting their babies interested in solids?  I know that nutritionally it's not a big issue right now, but I worry that she's going to be a picky eater.

  • That would totally piss me off, you shouldn't worry!

  • How crazy!  I don't even understand how he could say something like that with a straight face.  Glad you're finding a new pedi....

Tess12, I have a friend whose son didn't start to like eating solids until he was 13 months old.  I think it's something they just have to get used to over time, picky eating isn't an issue at this point.

  • It's kind of sad that that doctor will probably get less discerning mothers than you to give up breastfeeding earlier than they should.  :(

tess - my little guy is just now really getting into eating solids.  He just wasn't a big fan of most of the store-bought purees or stage 2 foods, but now that I'm giving him our dinners in a chunky mash, he is in HEAVEN!  Tonight he ate pasta with a tiny bit of tomato sauce and (I admit) parm cheese.  He was such an eager beaver, I couldn't shovel it in fast enough.  I gave him minestrone soup earlier this week too and he devoured it.  There's a pic in my blog if you scroll down far enough.  Just keep hanging in there and trying different foods, different textures and different times of day.  We also have a lot more success at dinner if the whole family's at the table.  btw - your little girl has such adorable hair.  :)

  • WTF?DS is almost 9 months, and he's barely eating solids - that dr. sounds like an idiot...

  • Tess,

?? My DS is now a year and he is a picky eater. ?When we started purees he tried pretty much everything once and there were plenty of things he wouldn't touch again. ?There were also some things that he wouldn't touch in purees, peas for one, and can't get enough of in whole form. ?We have days where all he eats is yogurt and days where he only has milk, then days where he eats almost anything. ?Personally I don't think that you can do much as far as becoming a picky eater or not.?

  • I always heard that breast fed babies were less likely to be picky eaters because the breast milk always has different flavors depending on what momma eats.?

  • Wow, I'm glad you're finding a new pedi!  That's a completely irresponsible and dumb thing for a doctor to say!

  • Nothing original, but I just find it odd that any doctor would say that.  The baby's primary source of food should be breastmilk or formula for the first year, period.  When we first started introducing solids I would try to replace feeds with solids. Then I read that was a big huge major no-no!  Now she has no interest in purees and only wants cheerios and finger food.  I agree with the PP who talked about that.  Once she's a little older and has a couple of teeth, try things she can pick up and put in her mouth, but don't worry about it for now.
  • I'd find a new pedi too!  His comment was off.

  • I had a similar situation, but it didn't affect me since BFing didn't work for me. DD's weight is off the charts because she's so little, and at the last appointment they wanted me to put extra formula-- like, quite a bit extra-- to make her gain more. When I asked what they'd say if were BFing and obviously couldn't really add more calories, they said they'd tell me to stop BFing and and start FF. That surprised me.

I'd find a new pedi if I were you, too.

  • at 6 months solids aren't a big deal, now maybe I could understand if he wasn't eating solids and was close to a year, but are you serious? Stop breatfeeding so he has no choice but to eat solids???

  • It would be like a pedi telling a FF baby's mother...

stop feeding them formula until they eat solids...

huh?  ds is almost 10 months now and we are still strictly on solids.  if at 12 months, ds is still not eating solids, the pedi said that we will no be able to switch to milk and we will probably have to have a feeding and swallowing evaluation.  Sad
