Anyone heard of finding out gender at 12 weeks?!

Hi Everyone!

HAPPY FRIDAY. We have our 12 week ultrasound and testing next Tuesday and we can't wait! I have a few friends who have had kids and they are telling me that their doc asked them at their 12 week if they wanted to know the sex?? One friend opted to NOT know and the other said yes... they told her they were pretty sure it was a GIRL but not to buy pink yet.. until a later ultrasound can confirm it... turns out they were right at 12 weeks and she had a girl! Wondered if anyone else has heard of this or had any similar experiences? I am not getting my hopes up... but I didn't think there was ANY chance that they would be able to even give us an IDEA on the sex at 12 weeks??

Any thoughts/stories would be greatly appreciated:)

  • This seems to come up every other week - general view seems to be, yes it is possible to determine the sex earlier in the pregnancy but the accuracy is lower. I'd personally prefer to wait until 20 weeks and get a more accurate answer.

  • Yes, I've heard this.  I know a few frieds that found out and it was correct, but I also had a friend and they were wrong.

  • Both my best friend and my SIL were told at 12 weeks that they were having boys just to be told at 20 weeks that they were girls.  I think they might be able to guess by what they're seeing but from what I've read, their genitals aren't totally formed until about 15 weeks... So, if they do tell you, take it with a grain of salt and wait on making plans. GL, I hope it goes well and enjoy seeing your little bundle!
  • I'm thinking it's a guess and not to get too excited.......although I probably wouldn't turn down their input at 12 weeks!  There is a website: https://www.in-gender.com/cs/forums/95.aspx that you can post your US pics and US techs and people comment on what they think the sex is.......kind of neat if you want to play around with it :)

All fetuses at 12 weeks have external genitalia... there is no way to predict that early...

  • I had an NT scan yesterday and they couldn't tell.  at 13 weeks 1 day.

  • If you google the "nub theory" you can read about the possibility there.  Our tech told us about it last week, but told us it's just for fun.  We were team green with our first two children, and will be finding out the sex at 20 weeks with this one. She said she thinks it's a boy based on the angle of the genitals, but reminded us that it was just a fun guess.  :-)

  • We had the u/s tech tell us at the NT scan. I was 12 weeks 3 days. I wish that we didn't have her guess what she thought it was. I've had feelings that this baby is a boy but she guessed girl. I will be thrilled either way but now that she guessed it's a girl, I can't help but think of this baby as a girl and am excited for that. I will still be ecstatic if it's a boy but it will be weird to feel so strongly for 8 weeks now that I'm having a girl.

I personally think its better to not know until they can give you a for sure answer. I've heard that the "angle of the dangle" is only about 65% accurate.

  • Personally, I have no idea if it is always accurate, but I too have a doctors appointment and u/s next week (I'll be 12w6d preggo). My DH and I were thinking about asking the tech if she could take a wild guess, you know, just for fun. We are very anxious to find out what we are having so that's part of the reason we want to see. (LOL) I'm just not sure that my doctor's office will do it, so I guess we will find out! But I do agree not to get your hopes up about them being 100% correct from the 12 week u/s, because you never know, they could be wrong! :D
