Naps are a work in progress; anyone else following what SleepEasy says about the 1 HR nap? I'm doing only 45 min bc she has never been a long napper... Curious how everyone else is doing w/naps!
7) Progress Update/Successes
We're still doing good!

I just wanted to say that even though we haven't started sleep training our lo yet, it's awesome to see how great you guys are doing. It makes me feel a lot more confident and comfortable with this training.

2) Length of time crying before LO fell asleep - less than a minute
3) Any wakeups - 1:00 & 4:30
4) Dreamfeed/regular feeding - dreamfeed at 11:00, regular feeds at 1:00 & 4:30
5) What you did to stay busy and not cry - N/A
6) Any challenges/questions/concerns - Naps are going better since putting her down 1.5hr after she wakes up from last sleep. She doesn't seem to be sleeping soundly through naps since yesterday. She snoozes for a bit, cries out for a bit, snoozes a bit longer. I just keep her in her crib for the hour unless she gets too out of control crying.
7) Progress Update/Successes - Last night was her best sleep yet, only two wakeups until she woke up for the morning.

I hope you don't mind if I join you ladies as we just started last night. It was very rough and I could definitely use some support and suggestions.
1) Day number/Start date - 1st night (10:55-7:45)
2) Length of time crying before LO fell asleep - on and off for 2 1/2 hours, it was time to eat then so I fed him and set him back down. He cried another 40 mins or so and finally passed out for the first time of the evening. It was brutal.
3) Any wakeups - He woke up twice between 11 and 2 but put himself right back to sleep by sucking on his hand so I thought that was good progress.
2:00 and 4:00 It was time to feed so fed him and put back down. Cried on and off for 1 hour and 45 mins. Fell asleep for 10 mins and got right back up right away. Talked to himself for awhile then fussed so I fed him again since it was after 4. After I put him back down he looked around for about 30 mins then fussed for 15 mins and fell asleep.
Woke up at 7:45 in a pretty good mood considering he cried more than slept. I actually do not think he looks any more tired than usual. Maybe because he finally got some deeper sleep?
5) What you did to stay busy and not cry - Watched t.v., watched the monitor
6) Any challenges/questions/concerns - The amount of crying was way more than I expected. I knew he would be stubborn, however. Am I horrible for not giving in? Was it wrong to feed him before he even fell asleep for the night? Any ideas why he got up after 10 mins around 4:00? I thought he must be hungry? I am really worried about the nap this morning which is coming up soon.
7) Progress Update/Successes - The fact he put himself back to sleep twice and that one time it only took 15 mins of crying to go back down after the last night feeding. Praying tonight goes better. Good luck to all of you ladies as well!
1) Day number/Start date - Day 1 (8:25 - 7:35)
2) Length of time crying before LO fell asleep - 1 hour and 7 minutes
3) Any wakeups - 10:45 and 3:45
4) dream/regular feeding - feeding at wake ups
5) What you did to stay busy and not cry - Cleaned kitchen, put big kids to bed, knitted, bumped
6) Any challenges/questions/concerns - When you put the sleep time in question one, is that the time she was put in bed or the time she actually fell asleep? Also for naps are you doing the exact same routine you do for bedtime? Because her naps up to now are usually great swaddled and in her swing, but crib naps suck!
7) Progress Update/Successes - Sleep, I actually got sleep last night, and I had an evening. Wow.
Faupanda- I'm jealous of your naps. For diapers... I actually change her before I feed her. I try to get to her before she fusses for too long so she's not starving... And I change the diaper very fast IN the crib, then take her out and feed her. I just leave a changing pad next to the crib with a diaper so it's all right there for me at 4am. I find if I change her after, she spits up more and gets irritated because she just ate and she just wants to go back to sleep. HTH!

Welcome Jackie. ;-)
I'm thinking you might want to think more about if LO needs to eat that often through the night. If he is underweight or was a preemie maybe but otherwise...? I know when you said he cried for 2.5 hrs and it was time to eat, so you picked him up, but I think that he should have gone longer; I would have stuck with it. (Do i sound mean? Sorry!) If it were 3-4 hours I might have fed him... But during the night they should go longer stretches w/o needing to eat. Also, did you wake him at 2 & 4 to eat or did he wake on his own? Again, just two hours between these feedings seem like too much? Those are just my thoughts but I'm no professional - we're all learning. :-)
Edit for spelling.

2) Length of time crying before LO fell asleep: none, 2 nights in a row!
3) Any wakeups: oh, yeah - but, it was DH's night to take care of her, so even though I woke-up I didn't have to get-up. She woke around 1 and settled herself after about 15 minutes and again at 4.
4) Dreamfeed/regular feeding: LO eats really well during the day, so we're following babycenter.com's advice and are not offering a bottle in the middle of the night unless she continues crying for more than an hour & nothing else is wrong. (although I have to admit, I gave in one night this past week and gave her a bottle because she was waking frequently and I couldn't take it and caved) The CIO article suggests that if baby is eating really well during the day that around 4mos most babies are able to make it through the night without eating. But, you have to make the judgement call about whether or not your baby is ready for this.
5) What you did to stay busy and not cry: Whenever it's DH's night to take care of LO, I fight the urge to go downstairs and help by deep breathing and reminding myself that even if he doesn't like having to get-up, I work full-time too need a break.
6) Any challenges/questions/concerns: I talked to daycare earlier this week about her naps, but it looks like they've only put her down for a real nap once this week. And, of course, she slept great that night, too. There's one worker we've complained about to the director, but she's the director's assistant and so I don't think they took us seriously. We might be trying to get on another center's waiting list if things don't improve.
7) Progress Update/Successes: Even if she's still waking throughout the night, I'm super excited that she's going right to sleep on her own after we finish our bedtime ritual. Last night, she was out before I got back from filling her humidifier.
Someone had a question about feeding before bed. Bedtime bottle has always been part of our bedtime routine, so we've kept it. If it's part of your routine and works for you, I say keep it. It helps me feel confident that baby is not going to bed hungry and that she will stay satisfied overnight since we're not offering a bottle until "breakfast" in the morning. HTH

Thanks for the advice JK! I knew I had a little sleep monster, I just had to get the conditions just right! Today's naps are not going so well... she keeps trying to fall asleep during nursing, as soon as I put her down she starts crying. She's in her crib right now and she is sleeping, but she keeps waking up every few minutes crying. Some days are better than others. I'm going to take a nice long shower while she's napping.
I will try the diaper/changing pad next to the crib tonight.
Our naps were good for a week, then bad for three days, and today they are all going great again. Good thing these kids are so cute!!! :-)

This was my thought too when I read it. I would have fed him after the first 2.5 hours, but it seems if you fed him at 2, he shouldn't need to eat until at least 5 or 6.
How often are you feeding during the day? Also, are you nursing or ff? The reason I ask is because I have noticed Ariella was waking up every hour or so before we started this, and I would put her on the breast, but she was not eating, she was pacifying herself. If you are FF I imagine if he's only taking an ounce or so at those feedings, I would try to ween him.
Thanks for the warm welcome! I last had fed LO at 6:30 so the first feeding had been after about 3 and a half hours. Before starting training I did notice LO seemed to eat a lot around 10, 2 and 4 so I didn't want to not feed him during those times the first night. He woke on his own at 2 and 4. Ferber suggests spacing the feedings out an additional 1/2 hour each night, so that is what I am planning on. Anyone try something similar?
Our first nap went ok. He fell asleep after about 15 mins of crying, but only slept 30 mins and did not fall asleep after leaving for 30 additional minutes. Now we are on nap 2, not asleep yet...
We put him down to sleep at 7:15 last night because he just could not hold it together any longer through our bedtime routine. He didn't fall asleep until 10:55, so I was wondering what time we should shoot for tonight?
Also, to answer the other questions that I missed (Lack of sleep gives me ADHD)..he is breastfed exclusivley and I am too lazy to pump in the middle of the night. I also have been worried about how much he has been eating during the day because he is so interested in everything else. That is why I didn't want to change his feedings up too much the first night because I think he has gotten in a bad night feeding pattern. Tonight I will add a half an hour to each and hopefully he will stay sleeping anyway!
Thanks again!..I just have to say even though his naps haven't lengthened that the 3rd nap of the day he cried less than 5 minutes. I really hope this means bedtime will go more smoothly. I really am excited to see how much progress he is already making but I just hope we keep moving forward and don't have to go backwards.

Thanks for posting! We'll be starting as soon as our visitors leave and we get back to 'normal', and I know dd is going to be way more stubborn than ds ever was (the longest he cried was 1 hour), and I've been looking on here for a story of someone who really did have to deal with it longer and still stuck with it, just to show myself that other people can do it so I can too. Good luck and stay strong and hopefully it will get much better very quickly!
Thanks so much! I was frantically looking all over these boards for people who had LOs that cried longer than an hour or so and couldn't find any. I felt like the worst mom in the world, but I just could not go in and have all of the crying be for nothing. Good luck to you as well. Keep us all posted!
Late to the game (west coast) and missed yesterday but all and all, things have been going better- especially the naps! Yay! I guess you gotta trust the process...:)
This checkin has been so helpful!
1) Day number/Start date started Monday 1/30 last night: (6:15p-6:30a)
2) Length of time crying before LO fell asleep - 0, she is so exhausted by the change in her schedule that she can't stay away past 6:15. Hopefully b.c the naps are getting better, she'll be up later tonight.
3) Any wakeups - I woke her at 12 for a dream feed and she woke at 4 for another feed. I didn't know she was going to wake up for that one so Tonight I will set my alarm for 3 and feed her before she wakes up and cries for me, per sleepeasy and the advice of the lovely ladies here. I'm going to let her have her 2 feedings per night if she needs them for now, she seems to sleep better in the day with them and I'll try to wean down to 1 in earnest when she's closer to 5 months.
4) Dreamfeed/regular feeding - one of each
5) What you did to stay busy and not cry - she didn't cry! Watched Daily Show and Colbert in good spirits, for once in a long time.
6) Any challenges/questions/concerns - feeling pretty good
7) Progress Update/Successes - naps are really straightening themselves out, which is good to see. My MIL watched her yesterday and I thought it was going ot be a day of crying but she ended up sleeping for at least an hour for all 3 naps. I know part of it is that I've started to rock her a bit and humm to her to calm her down for 8-10 min before each nap. I hate to say that earlier this week I would see she was tired, rock her for 30 seconds and put her down. My ped. nurse reminded me that she is doing so much and taking so much in that she needs a long cool down period before the nap. That reminder has made all the difference.
