New to Sarasota and have a few questions

Hi, I'm new to Sarasota and I'll actually be living in the Lakewood Ranch area.  I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good OBGYN doctor in the area.  Also, are there any groups I could join for expecting mothers to meet some new people?  Any help would be great! Thanks, Sara

Re: New to Sarasota and have a few questions

  • Hi Sara! I live in Bradenton, and I delivered at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. I see Dr. Shroder at First Physicians Group, and I've never heard anything bad about any of the doctors in that practice. I love, love, love the way the office is run, too - I've never had a long wait or issues scheduling an appointment. I've also heard great things about the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, although I don't know any of the doctors by name.

I don't know about groups for expectant mothers - I took childbirth classes at SMH but didn't keep in touch with any of the couples there. SMH has a great mommy/baby group that I think is open to all new mommies (we had several moms from the medical center in our group, too) - they meet on Wednesdays, and there are two age groups (0-6 months and 6-12 months). There's an awesome breastfeeding group in the area, too - they meet on Friday mornings (11:15 a.m.) at First Presbyterian Pre-School in Sarasota. There are also a number of other groups/gatherings (a baby-wearing group, a free play area at a local church, etc.) that I learned about through those two groups.

  • Hi Sara,

I see Dr. Hamel in First Physicians Group and love her. She works out of SMH. Not sure about doctors for LWR, but I do know that LWR Med Center does prenatal yoga classes (which I really want to go to!) and other child education classes. SMH does the education classes as well, but it sounds like that is farther. Some of the doctors, including Dr. Hamel and I think Dr. Shroder, go to SMH on University a few days a week to see patients out that way. It's a quieter office, Dr. Hamel is there on Tuesdays. There are some stroller fit groups and play groups in the LWR area that I have friends that go to, but none specifically that I know of for expecting moms. Maybe we could make our own?  =)   Good luck.

  • I absolutely love OBGYN Women's Center in LWR - I see Jill Miller as my regular gyno but their prenatal system is a rotating system of all doctors at the practice. I have always had the same doctor for my visits, so far, so good!

They also offer prenatal yoga on Monday evenings at the hospital. Really calming and great class.

    Good Luck!

  • Hi Sara,

Although I live in Sarasota, I go to Premier OBGYN on State Road 64 in Bradenton.  They are fantastic and deliver at LWR Hospital.  Hubby and I are registered for the classes at LWR, which we'll start soon.

    Best of Luck,

    Rebecca
