Who has delivered at Holy Spirit?

My O.B. delivers at both Harrisburg and Holy Spirit. I've heard some not-so-great things about Harrisburg (very crowded, hard to find parking since it's in the city, etc.) but don't know much about Holy Spirit besides the fact that it is smaller, and they deliver only 1,000 babies a year vs. 5,000 at Harrisburg.

I believe both have a NICU.

Anyone have any experience, thoughts? Thank you! We're new to the area.

Re: Who has delivered at Holy Spirit?

  • I delivered at Harrisburg and it was great, no problems as all with parking, they have a large garage.  I delivered my daughter at Holy Spirit but that was 13 years ago.  At the time the facility was brand new but I've heard negative things about HS in the past few years.  Tour them both and see where YOU feel most comfortable.

  • I delivered at HS in July.  Besides one nurse being a b!tch, it was a great experience.  I like the idea of a smaller birth center.  They do have  NICU.

Tour both, see which you get a better feeling with!

  • I agree with PP's to look at both hospitals.  I used Harrisburg Hospital and received great accommodations and care.

  • Just delivered at Holy Spirit today and so far, everyone I've encountered has been fantastic.  I'm on my third nurse for the day and all of them have been wonderful, and my midwife was AMAZING (she's part of the Center for Women's Health practice which is right on the HSH campus).  The anesthesiologist was fantastic, too - super nice and incredibly efficient despite a somewhat more difficult situation (he inserted my epi when I was 9.5 cm!).  There is a NICU, but honestly, DH and I chose to deliver at HSH rather than Hbg b/c of the NICU situation - if it came down to it, we would have fought to have LO sent to Hershey's NICU, which is easier done at HSH than it would have been at Hbg.  Luckily, she's not in need of NICU services, but that's how we picked.

I'd agree w/ the others - tour both and see what you prefer!

Why would Hershey Med be easier from HSH than Hbg?

  • We were told that a transfer from HSH --> Hershey would be easier to get accomplished than a transfer from Hbg --> Hershey.  Wasn't really given the reasoning behind it; we just took it at face value and accepted it.  Luckily, it was a moot point for us.

Which MW delivered?  I had Barb.  She was awesome. =]

  • I have nothing to compare it to but I loved everything about Holy Spirit. (I think I might've had Barb too... how awful is it that it's only been a little over a year and I already forget!)

We were admitted twice in the weeks following the birth to Harrisburg Hospital (pediatrics i suppose, not the birth center) and I really didn't enjoy it. At all. But, I know someone who had a good experience, so who knows?

  • Unfortunately I had to deliver my son way too early but the staff at Holy Spirit were fantastic. They were very accommodating of my husband and mother.
