AAAH! All the mealtime mess!

I need advice. All three of mine are wearing those big plastic bibs with pockets, and the boys are "learning" to use spoons, so they are very messy right now. It seems like for breakfast, lunch & dinner every day I am doing the assembly line clean up & am trapped under an ocean of messy bibs & they end up all over the kitchen before I have a chance to throughly clean them. Do you guys wash them out after each use & hang dry them?

I know it's a borring topic, but I could really use some input from others on this.

  • We take their shirts off while we feed them.  Wipe them down and put their shirts back on.

  • I still do non-messy finger foods for breakfast and lunch (fruit, pancakes, quesadillas) and save the spoon practice for dinner when they eat stripped down, and then the bibs go in the wash immediately after.

  • I bought the plastic bibs and used them a couple times when I realized I hated them. It was much easier to toss the cloth bibs in the laundry then dealing with those plastic ones and having to wash them and hang them. I agree with PP who said to take their shirts off for messy food and just wipe them down afterwards.

  • Have you tried the Baby Bjorn soft bib? It's a soft/medium plastic, but it's kinda molded so it's pretty easy to just hold over the sink and just wipe out with a rag. I put them in the dishwasher whenever I run it (not sure if you're supposed to, but it works). Tommy Tippee also has one that's similar but rolls up easily. I use these in the diaper bag. Then I can just brush out the food, and put it back (you can usually wipe them down to where they look completely clean). I'm a bib freak, so I used a few different kinds (I really love the ones with long sleeves), but I like these plastic ones for convenience.

Either way though, I feel like all I do is clean up the kitchen. Same ole, same ole. Wipe down babies, highchairs, bibs, wash dishes/cups, dustbust floor...then repeat...then repeat...then repeat!

  • We have a million plain old cloth bibs - I think they're Gerber? - bought them in bulk. We just toss them in w/the laundry.
