F/u to flying with a lot of pumped milk

Well I'm waiting for my flight here at the san fran airport, so I made it through security with all 90 or so ounces of milk. I brought it all in a cooler, and told the guy at the xray machine that it was breast milk. He looked at it and was like, uh...how much? I was like, a lot? He did not look like he knew what to do with it. They ended up just doing that test where they rub a piece of paper on it and put that into a machine. I also forgot to take out my computer so I was all kinds of trouble. Still didn't take much extra time though. In a related note, SFO has pumping rooms! Atlanta does not, though. Boo. I can't wait to get back home to my baby!

  • Glad it worked out!! In an ironic twist... The flight attendant lounge in Atlanta has a mothers room, but the one in SFO does not. :) What airline are you flying??

  • How funny, maybe they figure you can use the public one. I'm on Delta.

  • Thank you for following up. I'm going on a trip this weekend and have been wondering how the return trip with a bag full of milk is going to be.

  • Sounds like it went really well! When I flew with all my milk a few weeks ago they didnt test it and I got a little lecture about how next time I need to take the other liquids out (baby tylenol)...They were really super nice about it!

  • Does anyone know how it works flying with frozen BM?  My BFF is flying to Florida in a week or so with her LO for vacay and she wanted to take down some of her stash because she knows there may be times she'll pump & dump.

flying with frozen milk is fine.  i've done it a number of times (i froze while on business trips while i was still nursing dd1).  i just stuck bags of frozen milk in a soft cooler and went through the same drill described above.  every airport seems to have their own screening procedure, but i would just loudly declare to anyone who would listen that i had a bag full of breastmilk. usually they would find a female screener who would examine the milk.

i also used frozen peas instead of an ice pack since i wasn't sure if the gel in the ice pack would be a problem.

  • The gel packs are fine! I found some at my local dollar tree that have stay insanely cold!! Today I worked from 9am until 7pm and they were still frozen when I got home to put them back in the freezer.
