Hot Sauce Punishment

A teacher in Florida poured hot sauce on crayons to punish autistic students for putting them in their mouths.

  • That is awful!

PS: Love reading The Huffington Post

  • I'm slightly ashamed at myself that I think it's worse because the kids are autistic.

I know what you mean, but my gut instinct was also to think that its worse.

  • That is just heartbreaking... for any child.
  • so sad - I once had a teacher squirt hand sanitizer into a kid's open wound because he wouldn't stop picking his scabs during class.

I don't feel ashamed at all for thinking it's worse-- it's likely that those children are not on the same level cognitively as their peers. It's not uncommon for children with autism to have PICA which causes them to eat non-food items-- this behavior is completely beyond their control. It's not the same as a 7 year old defying a teacher by putting crayons in their mouth because they're bored.

Regardless, my point was this is terrible for any child.  Not just those with special needs.

  • Wow.  I didn't even read the article, but that is just awful.

Ahhh. I misunderstood your point-- I thought you felt guilty for feeling like it's worse for special needs kids. I do think it's worse for them-- bad for any kid, worse for a special needs kid.
