Divorcing your OBGYN?

Hello ladies,

I like my OBGYN, but she's hard to get an appt with her and the last two times I've gone to her, I've had to wait over an hour and a half after my appt time. My first prenatal appt. is next Friday, but I'm thinking about switching to a different doctor.  Has anyone done this?  How much of a hassle was it?

 Thanks.

  • Its not much of a hassle at all.  The hardest thing can be switching your records over.  I was well into my second tri when I switched with my first.  I do think you should speak with your OB.  Providers deserve to know when there is an issue...it's the only way they can change.  In regards to appointments...with any provider you should try and go with the first am one or the one right after lunch (if they break for lunch).  Good luck!

  • It wasn't bad at all. I switched twice now because I didn't like the first two and how their bedside manner was. It was easy!! I definitely recommend doing it if you aren't happy with any aspect of the practice.

  • It was very easy.  It just took awhile for the records to be moved to the new doctor as he is in a different practice.  Speaking from experience if you have a feeling you should change then do it for sure.  I wish I would have changed sooner because I love my new doctor and it shows me how many things were wrong with my old one.

  • Very easy to switch, my new practice always handled the record transfer and I was very glad I did with my first.

  • I just switched doctors. It was very easy, I just called my previous clinic to ask how to transfer my records; which was that I needed to fill out a record transfer form (on their website) and fax it to them. Did that, canceled my schedule appointment, all is well. It was more hassle thinking about it than actually doing it.

  • You're switching because you have to wait an hour and a half past your appointment time? oookay.....

Just to give you some perspective, I love my OBGYN. I'm waiting for my first appoinment until I'm home to see him. But on average he runs 4 to 6 hours late on appointment days because he's also the go to guy for emergency c-sections for major womens hospital in town.

  • I'm not ok having to wait an hour and half past my appointment time, and I definitely wouldn't put up with waiting 4-6 hours.  My time is more important to me than that.

I totally agree with this statement. I understand that on occasion emergencies come up, but if a doctor is routinely this late for an appointment he is too busy to take you on as a patient. With my last pregnancy the longest I waited was about 45 minutes. I did that once because he was just coming out of surgery.  On average I waited about 10 minutes. With my first prenatal appointment with this pregnancy, I waited less than 10 minutes. I am very happy with my experiences (so far) with both doctors. Unless you live in a very small town, you can find a doctor that will prioritize your care (and time!)
