Weaning question

DS is 18 months and I'm starting to think about weaning.  I am a little sad about it because I was hoping to go until he was at least 2.  We are TTC though and my cycles seem really screwed up.  I got my first postpartum period when he was 14 months.  I don't know if I should wait a little longer and see if they work themselves out or not.  I think I have ovulated (though I wasn't charting so I can't be sure) two or three times which is good.  But several times I have had lots of bleeding between periods and I never know when/if I'm actually going to ovulate.  We really wanted to have our kids pretty close in age so I don't want to wait too long.

So anyways, would you wean at this point or try and wait a little while?  If so, how would I go about weaning?  I have always BF on demand so the don't offer, don't refuse deal wouldn't work.  He already asks to BF many times during the day (but he does STTN).  Thanks!

Re: Weaning question

  • We started TTC around the same time. My LO doesn't STTN, so I took temps for a while but it never seemed like it was telling me anything since I never slept for a long enough period of time to make a difference.

If you look up ovulation test on Amazon Baby you can find a pack of 40 O tests and 10 P tests for $9 something. Great deal! A few days after I started my period I started taking daily O tests (you can find out all about how to do it at peeonastick.com) and found out when I ovulated that way. We had sex like crazy and BAM! Pregnant that first month.

It may take longer of course...we were lucky to get pregnant first month we knew for sure when I was ovulating, but that is normal without breastfeeding. My LO is almost 22 months now and we're still BF, though I can tell my supply is dropping off steadily. He has slowed down when he wants to nurse some, and he comfort nurses and gets what he can whenever he wants. I'm hoping we'll make it til 2yr, but I'm not so sure with my supply like it is. It is still on his terms, though, so we're both happy. (Except that now my nipples are SUPER SORE OMG...but whatever).

  • Thanks for the info!  I actually do use OPK's.  They are great.  They do tell you that you are likely to ovulate since they measure the LH surge right before you ovulate.  Unfortunately, they don't confirm ovulation since the LH surge can happen without ovulation actually taking place.  The only way to confirm is through a temp dip after ovulation.  But, like I said, I do think I have ovulated since I was using those tests and had other ovulation symptoms.  So that's good.  That's nice it happened so quickly for you.  Hopefully it won't take too long for me :).

  • Yeah my plan was to use both, but....no go on temps. :)

I definitely got really lucky. It is such a relief...I was told most of my life that I was infertile and had to work a bit to get pregnant with DS1, so I felt like I was a fully functional woman for the first time when I actually confirmed that I even MAY ovulate on schedule! :)

Good luck! I hope it works out quickly for you either way.
