About a month ago we started bedsharing with DD. She nurses several times throughout the night and it seems like her latch while side-lying is not the greatest - so now my nipples are cracked and hurting like crazy! Has anyone else run into this? Any tips to improve an older baby's latch when nursing side-lying?
Re: Bedsharing/night nursing and nipple pain?
Honestly, I have to position myself around G. I just make sure he's at the right level (not too high or low on the breast) & get a good latch. Then I'll put a little cylindrical pillow under my back to keep myself at the right angle while having back support. I always thought those pillows were solely decorative until I started BFing lol.
Anyway, it definitely takes practice! When he was smaller I had to position him on a pillow so his head was higher off the bed. I know pillows are a no-no, so maybe a crib angler wedge would work if you're worried about safety. Sorry you're having pain already! That definitely makes it harder because even a good latch still hurts
Maybe a few bottles during the day will give your breasts a break & they can heal. I'd find I'd have sore nipples when I'd fall asleep & G would latch on when my nipples were basically pointed at the ceiling instead of at him, or when I'd roll a little so it would partially slip out of his mouth. That's where stuffing pillows under my back came in handy.
