2 year old with ASD waking at night

Help!  My 2 year old has woken up and stayed up for hours for the last two weeks.    He has occasionally done this in the past, but it's been every night.  I have lengthened our nighttime routine and made sure he does not get overstimulated before bed.  After a few hours he goes back to sleep.  Any other ideas?  My husband is gone for army training for 5 months and with a baby and working full time it's really starting to wear me down (and I am sure my son).

  • DS started doing this a while back and he's also 2.  What does he do when he's awake?  Does he appear to be distressed in any way or is he just awake?  DS used to babble or sing, never like he was upset or anything.

  • I am no help, just wanted to say sorry you are having such a tough time and I hope it resolves quickly. I can't imagine how hard that must be.
  • Thanks!  No he doesn't seem to be in any pain.  He is just wide awake and wants to play.  Its causing him now to take longer naps and wake up latter which I am sure is just adding to the problem.

  • My DS does this as well. He won't be 2 until April, but it start about 2 months ago. He wakes up, makes noises, babbles, plays with his stuffed animals, bounces or rocks in his crib until he eventually goes back to sleep. I tried Melatonin, which seemed to help him fall asleep, but not stay asleep. We tried the tight fitting pj's and that didn't work either. About 2 weeks ago, my DH got the idea to put his Elmo slippers on him when he went to sleep since he likes them so much. It seems to have helped since he has only awaken once in the past two weeks. Maybe you could try finding something comforting to him that he could wear to sleep?

  • Hmmm ... we used to think it had to do with his diaper because sometimes that's all it took.  I'd walk in, change his diaper, sing him his "it's time for XXXX to go to sleep ..." song and put him back in and boom ... sleep!  so we took to putting him down and then changing him (even if he was asleep) right before WE went to bed.  it did seem to help for a while but he's been waking up the past few nights but for maybe only 15-30 mins and then goes right back to sleep.

I like the slippers idea.  Might have to try that.

  • My suggestion is to lose the nap.  Both of my guys did stuff like this when they were ready to drop their nap.  I would cut out the nap and move bedtime up.  It might be a PITA for a while because he might be overtired in the early evenings but if it solves the other problem it would be worth it.

This.  T did this when she was about 2 1/2, and her nanny kept insisting on her napping every day.  We had a couple months of serious mommy fatigue.  Once she started daycare, she quit napping (just too interesting there, I guess!) and slept well again.  I guess she was just ready.  Now she naps every now and then, but not regularly, and she's happy as a clam.
