Subchorionic Bleeding?

Just had my first u/s today and the Dr just called to tell me that I need a follow-up u/s in 7 days since the technician saw some subchorionic bleeding.

Now I am beyond freaked out.  This is my first pregnancy.  I am only 6 weeks and I have had some very minimal spotting twice over the last week or so.  I have also had pretty constant but very mild cramps/discomfort... which I believed to be somewhat normal.   I'm also 40 years old so I'm ultra-worried that things can go wrong so much easier due to my age.

Have you had any experience with this?  I've done a bit of googling and it seems like it's not completely uncommon.   I'm just not sure how much I should be worried?

Re: Subchorionic Bleeding?

  • This is very common. I bled bright red with my DD for an entire day. I had it with this one too but not as much blood.

  • If you can help it stay away from google it will only scare you and make you stress out more. If you start bleeding heavily go to the ER which I'm sure you already know. Best of luck to you keep us updated.

  • It's VERY common (something like 20% of women get them) and usually nothing to worry about. I had a small one that caused me to have major bleeding around week 7, which can happen, but it often will just resorb into the uterine wall. It's only really an issue if it's very big or located right where the baby is (they tend to be along the wall of the gestational sac). Mild cramping is also normal, so try not to worry. It's good that they're checking again next week, and hopefully it resolves itself soon (but they can last into early 2nd tri from what I understand. Mine was gone by week 8 because it had bled out.)

  • I had this and everything turned out fine. I spotted for quite awhile and it resolved itself.

  • I haven't dealt with this personally, but my sister had it with 2/3 pregnancies.  Her bleeding was bright red and enough she needed pads and both babies are fine.  Just trust your instincts!

I had one with DD-- it was pretty major, and I ended up in the ER twice absolutely positive I was losing her.  First time was at 8 weeks, second time at 11 weeks.  My doc told me they usually take up to week 20 to heal.  I was put on bedrest, although there is no research that really shows it helps.  I drank a ton of water, put my feet up, and said a lot of prayers.  The good news is that it is super scary for YOU, but baby is totally unaffected and it is EXTREMELY rare for it to end in mc.  Chin up, it is not fun, but it will resolve and baby will be fine!
