1st Trimester

6 weeks and spotting

This morning I woke up and went to the bathroom and had some pink/red blood when I wiped, not a lot but enough to freak me out.  I was not cramping at all.  I called the Dr and the nurse set me up for an ultrasound at the hospital this afternoon.  Before my appointment the spotting turned brown and is still really only there when I wipe.  I have some pain in my left groin (which I have had on and off this whole pregnancy and even in the past with periods).  My ultrasound showed that I am 6 weeks and there was a heartbeat. From what they can tell everything looks good.  I have not had intercourse or anything in the last few days, the only thing I did differently is I picked up my 50lb dog briefly last night to put her on the bed.  I won't be able to talk to my Dr until tomorrow and I am still worried that there could be a problem. Anyone have a similar experience or any advice?  I'm an RN in the NICU and this is my first pregnancy, I have tried not to freak out about things but I am finding it really hard this time not to!

Re: 6 weeks and spotting

  • I know it's hard not to worry. I had some spotting at 7 weeks (brown and just a tiny bit) and then some last night. I called my OBGYN and they said that as long as I'm not filling a pad an hour for 2 hours with red blood and not having serious cramps that I shouldn't worry at all. It's so hard no to, but worrying hurts baby. Try and keep yourself distracted and having heard the hb is very reassuring! GL!

  • I started spotting last night, just when I wiped once after work then it tapered off.  Then it came back this morning.  The dr got me in this morning and did an u/s.  I have a largish fibroid that she suspects is the cause of my intermitent blood.  I did see the baby who is measuring right on target with a beautiful strong heartbeat.  I have to go back every week so she can check the tumor to make sure it is not growing.  FX That it remains the same size and does not hinder the babies position/movement.

Try not to stress out too much until you know more, bleeding is not 'normal' but it is common and many times it does not indicate the demise of the baby.  Just try to remain calm, as hard as I know that is!

  • I had spotting with my last pregnancy, at times what seemed heavy to me, from about 7 weeks until 12. Everything was fine, and no one could really pinpoint the cause. This time, I've had very mild spotting. As long as you're not doing anything overly strenuous, there's nothing you can really do to prevent it. Just call your doc if you're concerned.

  • Thanks everyone.  I am trying to relax!  I just hope nothing else scary happens before my first visit on March 5th and that everything looks good then!  Good luck to all of you too!
  • I am at 6 weeks and am spotting as well. It kind of freaked me out since I really haven't had many pregnancy symptoms at all besides some occasional and mild cramping. I called my doctor last night and we are going to do an ultrasound on Monday to make sure everything is ok. It freaks me out that she wants to look because it worries me that there might be something wrong, but I am trying not to stress because its hard on the baby. However, I've been up since 5:30 this morning thinking about it. Sigh. If you are worried call your doctor. Its good to keep them in the know of what is going on with you. Good luck to you.
