Thoughts on the name Jolie

I'm really liking the name Jolie (pronounced jo-ley).  DH, however, isn't a huge fan.  He says he knew someone with the name and never thought, "wow, that's a pretty name."  But he admits he never thinks that about names.  I think I can talk him into it, especially because he hasn't suggested a single name and vetos every name I suggest.  But before pushing it, I wanted to see what others think.

Re: Thoughts on the name Jolie

  • I actually really like the name, but I am probably biased since my boss' daughter's name is Jolie and she is a very sweet little girl.  However, in her case, Jolie is actually a nickname for Joliana.

  • This is the name I call my DH. real name Joel, so I think of him first then Angelina.

  • It's french for "pretty".  I think it's a really pretty name.  It does remind me a bit of Angelina Jolie (yuck) but otherwise I like it.

  • It's on our list and a strong contender for a MN spot. I'm not sure I'm brave enough to use it for a FN. I do love it, but I notice that I pronounce it differently if I'm saying it as a FN or a MN. MN= jo-LEE like Angelina's last name. FN= JO-lee, almost like Joely. Either way I like it.

  • I kind of like it but I can only think of Angelina (really not a fan) - I guess it's not that big of a deal, if people ask you can just say that's not why you named her that.
  • I'm sorry, but I realllly dislike it. It reminds my of Angelina and I hate her. I think people either love Angelina or hate her, so that might make the name Jolie a love or hate (no in between) name...

It also reminds me a lot of Julie, which I'm not crazy about, but I don't hate...

  • i was subbing yesterday and a cute little 1st grade girl with long blonde hair and blue eyes had the name Jolianna (pronounced Jo-lee-anna) and went by Jolie. It was actually pretty cute, all the other girls always wanted to be her partner or play with her. It's nms, but it was cute on her.

  • Thanks everyone.  I guess I'll have to give this one some more thought.  The Angelina Jolie reference doesn't bother me too much since she pronounces her name Jo-lee (with a long e) rather than Jo-ley.  I suppose I could spell it Joley instead, which might eliminate the association.

So you want jo-LAY? Or JO-lee (like JOEL-ee)?

Jo-ley and Jo-ley means nothing with pronunciation. -lee and -ley sounds the same ? they are both give a long e.

    Angelina Jolie is jo-LEE.

Yes, Angelina is Joh-LEE -- the emphasis is on the LEE.  I want JOH-lee -- no emphasis on the lee.

LOVE Angelina Jolie and French names but .... not a fan of Jolie at all.

It sounds like a last name to me. It sounds incomplete and nicknamey as a first name, imo.

I have seen this name come up at least a dozen times in the last 6-12 months ... I just don't get the appeal.

    Yes This!

  • Not a fan. I would hate to be the sister who got stuck with Jolie and not something as lovely as Lila. Just a thought...

  • I really like Jolie. You don't hear it often.

  • I think it's pretty, but unfortunately, as other posters have said, the first thing that comes to mind is Angelina Jolie.  I can't get past that because Angelina Jolie just irritates me.
