Talk to me more about reflux

I just gave Carina her 5oz  bottle, there were lots of pauses because of her head turning and squirming.

I tried to burp her a little sooner between ounces than I usually do. Twice when she burped she spit up too. When it was apparent she wasn't going to drink anymore I out her in her rock and play. Soon as her butt touched it, spit up. Wiped it up and 5 minutes later more spit up. Could this really be reflux?

Is there a different position I could feed her in ? Or a different bottle I could try?

We've gone through 3 bottles already and she's currently drinking from Gerber first essential bottles (after having tried playtex drop ins , NUK and first years breast flow)

Re: Talk to me more about reflux

  • One thing I learned through having a reflux baby (he was diagnosed at 5 wks old), is it's not the spit-up, it's how the spit-up makes them feel.  Even when put on meds, his pedi told me he will still spit up just as much (and he sure did!), it just won't hurt as much.

Does she seem to be in pain while eating?  Bennett would eat like he was starving, but then scream/whimper while he was eating.  But he always wanted more because he was actually hungry, it just hurt to eat.  And being laid flat on his back or nearly flat would make the reflux flare up even more.

We used the Playtex VentAir, but have heard others have success with the drop-ins and Dr. Brown's.  But in the end, if she has reflux the bottle you use will help, but it can't fix it all.  If it seems like she's in pain, I'd express your concerns about reflux to her pedi.

  • Ditto the pp.

Both my kids were diagnosed with reflux before the massive spitting up occurred.  Arching of the back, difficulty eating, etc are all symptoms.  You can change bottles to help, but if it's hurting her, she'll need zantac or prevacid.  It won't lessen the spit up, but it will stop the spit up from burning.

  • I have another post below where I said that lately Carina's been fighting during her feedings , turning her head and squirming and really getting upset when I burp her... Someone mentioned it could be reflux. I wasn't aware it could have a late but sudden onset so I'm trying to learn more about it...

I guess I'll have to call her pedi sooner rather than later. Her two month check up is next Saturday but I don't think I can wait that long if my baby is possibly in pain.

I'm sorry, I missed that post.  I would get her in as soon as possible.  It's fairly easy to diagnose.  I finally called and said I know my baby is in pain and you need to figure out why!  :)  Zantac, a little rice cereal in his bottles, sitting upright during feedings and 30-60 minutes after and a crib wedge for sleep = a totally different baby!  Good luck getting some answers and hope she starts feeling better very soon.  And please keep us updated!

  • Is she formula fed? If so, what formula are you using, you may switch to a sensitive formula with some success. If you are nursing, try cutting out some gassy foods (broccoli, coffee, beans, etc). Feed at an upright angle, burp every oz. I know with DS we eventually went to mediction and I had to completely overhaul my diet (though he also had a milk allergy).

Thanks for the tips I appreciate them! She's not in her crib yet but I will get a wedge  since from birth she hates laying flat. Thank God for her rock and play !

  • i've been adding rice cereal to my girls' bottles for about a month now and it's done wonders to help with their reflux discomfort. there is still spit up, but it's less than before and they don't whine/fuss after bottles like they used to.

they started to fight us during every bottle (formula) - turn their heads, squirm, whine and cry. and spit-up volume became ridiculous. pedi said to try rice cereal in bottles and if that didn't help we'd have to see a GI. thankfully it worked!

pedi said at the time that about 90% of babies have reflux by 3m. we use lactose-free/sensitive formula (for a reason other than reflux) and dr. brown's bottles.

from what i understand, it is not uncommon for babies to develop reflux the older they get. we didn't start seeing symptoms until about 2 1/2-3 months.

    good luck!

Shes formula fed as I was never able to produce any milk (Sad)

However she already drinks Similac sensitive since at the hospital regular Similac gave her string mucousy poop and very bad gas.

  • I have a "happy spitter." He spits up ALL THE TIME and in mass quantities. Curdled, fresh, through his nose, everything. But he is smiley and it doesn't bug him at all and is gaining like a champ (he is 16+ pounds at 3 months, and was 7 pounds even at birth). In contrast, my first child was MISERABLE, and obviously very uncomfortable with reflux, and probably spit up LESS than DS #2 does.
DS #1 born 11/23/06 - our IVF miracle! Missing our sweet baby who was spontaneously conceived. 20 week loss on 6/24/10. DS #2 born 10/22/11 at 38w1d after FET #1. Life is GOOD!!!!!
