Drinking and nursing?

How do you do it? Alcohol that is...

Re: Drinking and nursing?

  • I limited myself to one drink/hour. That is about how quickly the body metabolizes alcohol and what I was comfortable with.

Sorry about that. My phone was acting up.

  • Kellymom has some really good guidelines. Basically, if you're not feeling it, then your milk's OK. So whatever "feeling it" means for you.....for me, it would be anything more than 1 drink :)

  • If you can safely drive, you can safely nurse.
  • I just drank until I puked then pumped and dumped for about 12 hours.

But them I'm a recovering alcoholic Wink

  • My lactation consultant preached that if it's not in your brain, it's not in your boobs. That said, I think that drunkness/tolerance/impairment is different for each person, so I generally would stick to the 1 drink an hour rule. That said, for me it was usually one drink every 45 mins. ;)
  • I did the one drink per hour rule.  I also used to pump and hoard milk all week so that I would have a bottle for Friday night.  :)

I used to use those test strips in the beginning...

I have those in case the baby decides she wants to eat at 10 pm and i've been drinking,  they work well.   But I have a really low tolerance,  I am currently feeling the 1/2 glass of wine I drank

  • Basically what everyone else said. If you can feel it, some will be in your breastmilk. In the beginning, it was a glass of wine TOTAL a night. After being sobor for 9 months, I was a light weight. Now I just keep it to about 1 drink an hour, or every 45 minutes or so (Um, I have a glass every night and I'm overweight, so 45 minutes and I have definitely processed it all) and I almost never feel it.

  • I checked out Kellymom and feel guilty for wanting to drink before 3 months but I know it is ok. Maybe I will try the milk test strips. I didn't drink at all with DS1 and rarely drink at all anyway...but I've been wanting to change that lately. My plan for 1/2 a beer tonight did not pan out as DS2 wanted to nurse all night. Hopefully soon.

    Thanks for all the feedback.

  • If you're uncomfortable, but wanting to have a drink - start with a dark beer! A dark beer a night is actually recommended to help increase milk supply! I was nervous at first, too. I talked to my doctor, and she assured me on what was safe.

  • Ditto everyone else, and I really liked the test strips - at the beginning I used them to reassure myself and to learn how much I could drink.
