Anyone own a nebulizer?

If so, where did you get it and how much did you pay for it?  We've had to do breathing treatments for DS several times now, and renting it from the pedi is starting to add up.  We could've paid for one already!  I think we should look into getting our own.

ETA: Also, which one/what brand do you have?

Re: Anyone own a nebulizer?

  • My dad just got one...

not sure price. His doctor is my cousin's best friend, so he gave it to him.

  • We have one that we bought from the pharmacy. It cost around $80. If the doctor had one on hand we would of gotten it free w/ our insurance at the time. Not sure the brand though. It's packed away. Haven't needed it in awhile.

Will your insurance company reimburse you?

  • We got ours from our doctors office and they said most insurance companies cover them and ours did. I also saw one for 60$ at Walgreens. The brand we have is Vios.

  • We actually got it through the ER when we had to take DD in for an emergency visit. I'm curious because I, for some reason, thought you needed a prescription for one? I could totally be wrong though.

ETA: Sorry - Just saw other responses. I guess I was wrong on the prescription. I do know our insurance paid for most of it.

I don't know the brand, but our insurance covered it 100%.

  • We bought our nebulizer from Mr. Neb through our insurance.  It was the only option our pedi offered.  It cost $50 our of pocket and I am glad we have one for future use with DS and subsequent children.

  • Your pedi rents it to you?? that stinks.  Ours lets us borrow it for free as long as it's returned within 2 weeks.  Our pedi said that they cost around $100 to buy.  I'm sure you can google it somehow.

I don't think you need a prescription for the machine, just the liquid stuff that goes into it.  At least that's how it was with us.  We got this liquid that we poured into it.  I think it was some sort of steroid.

  • I got DD's from the pedi and insurance covered it fully. I don't know the brand off the top of my head, but it looks like a panda bear...it's super cute making it easier for me to give DD her breathing treatments than with a conventional one that we've used at the pedi's office sometimes.

    This is us too.

Ask the pedi if they have one and if they can submit it to your insurance.

  • Pedi gave it to us. Once it went through insurance we had a bill for 100.00 including the doctor visit.

  • Great, thanks everyone.  I'll check with the insurance co. tomorrow.  My pedi didn't say anything about insurance covering it!!  He did say some places require a doctor authorization/prescription to buy one, but not everywhere requires it.

  • Our pedi gave us a new one after about 2 weeks of borrowing theirs and insurance paid for it.  We have a pretty severe case however that requires lots of treatments
