1st Trimester

Stevia/Truvia

What's the word on the street about this?  I forgot to ask my Dr. about it last time since it wasn't popular with my last pregnancy.

I'm avoiding sucralose and aspartame, but am terrified of getting GD, so curious about Truvia or Stevia.

Re: Stevia/Truvia

  • My personal opinion is to avoid substitutions. I'm vegetarian so I know all about substituting things.I would just cut down your normal sugar intake if you're worried about it, and switch to raw sugar if you're worried about the bleaching of regular sugar. I would also suggest agave nectar as a sweetener, you can also use juices to sweeten tea, or applesauce in recipes. Good luck :)

  • The FDA has classified Stevia as safe for use during pregnancy.  It is also a natural sweetener.

I have the same opinions but I'm gluten-free instead of vegetarian.

  • Stevia is a natural sweetener, it comes from a plant that is related to the sunflower. Agave nectar is also natural and it's great for sweetening teas, coffee, etc. I use Agave mostly, it's very sweet so you only need a tiny amount, which is also good because it can be pricey (I've found it cheapest at Costco). Both Stevia and Agave Nectar don't cause spikes in blood sugar and is thought to enhance glucose tolerance, making them ideal sweeteners for diabetics.
