Let's talk sleep, bumpers, and cereal

I don't really know how to deal with either of these issues, so I will just ask my wonderful e-friends.

SLEEP/BUMPERS - L is a tummy sleeper and because of this she moves during the night.  We have the angelcare monitor and once per night I will have to go into her room and move her because she has moved from the middle of the bed, to the very top and she reaches her arm through the slats in teh crib (her crib is actually even tighter than the FDA regulations so this is not a crib issue). It scares the bejeezus out of me. I don't mind the monitor beeping so I know she has moved, what is bothering me is that when I get there, she periodically has a random limb sticking out of the crib. I don't use a bumper and don't really know how else to keep her from sticking her arm or leg out. I am afraid to use the bumper because as close to the edge of the crib as she scoots she would definintely suffocate herself. WDID?

CEREAL - Doc recommended I put cereal in L's bottle in order to help her eat less. (She is eating over 40 oz a day since about 5 weeks). He said just a tablespoon in 1 or 2 bottles a day until she starts to take less (almost 6 oz every 2.5 - 3 hours). I tried this with rice cereal and it made her gassy so I stopped after a day or 2. It has nothing to do with wanting her to sleep more, I love her nightime sleep pattern and I have no desire to change it. Someone suggested using oatmeal instead of rice to see if her tummy will take it better. I don't like putting cereal in, but the doc said she seems to be taking a lot for her size. Have you heard of oatmeal being better on their stomachs than rice?

  • breathable bumper?

for the second, i'd call the pedi back and ask. for things like that with babies so small, i rarely trust others' opinions.

  • I was going to suggest the breathable bumper too.  I have one on Trey's crib for the same reason (he is also a tummy sleeper).  it's basically a thin colored mesh, so the air still gets through but arms/legs can't get through the slats.

I don't have any help for the feeding issue, like pp said, that's something I would really only trust the advice of my pediatrician.  Give them a call and see if they have other options for you besides the rice cereal.

DUH, I completely forgot about breathable bumpers. Thanks girls

  • We use bumpers.  I know they are "bad", but choose to.  There are too many rules that everyone gets all worked up about.  I have to decide which I feel are most important. I know my brother took my nieces bumpers off and within an hour he heard her screaming.  Her legs were all caught.  Bumpers are not only for keeping limbs in, but softening bumps.  Breathable ones have no cushion.  My cousin is a dr and both her kids used bumpers, too...Thats just my opinion...

We have a breathable bumper and though Liam isn't in his crib yet, I am so happy we bought it! Judging by how much he moves around in the PnP by my bed... I feel 10x's better knowing that once he is in his crib the bumper/suffocate on the bumper isn't a concern.

  • What are you afraid of when she sticks her arm through the slats?  DD1 used to sleep while dangling her arm out of the crib.  She never hurt herself and if she couldn't figure out how to bring it back in she yelled for me.  She quickly learned how to bring her arm back in though so it wasn't a problem.

Like others have said you can use a breathable bumper if you wish.

  • Is your DD getting too out of proportion, or does your pedi have a reason to worry about how much DD is drinking besides "it's a lot"?  If not, I'd ignore the cereal recommendation altogether, or get another opinion or doctor.

Unfortunately, her face is pressed against the side of the crib everytime I go in. Using a regular bumper is just not okay for me at this point.I use my own judgement on the rules (hence the fact that this is my third tummy sleeper, and with my oldest we used cereal in his bottle at only 2 weeks) however, when I already see the danger it would cause, I won't put her in danger just because.

Qmomy - she hasn't figured out how to get her arm back in and she is moving with her arm caught in the slat. It looks uncomfortable to me.

Dottymobo - I think he is concerned with her percentile growth. She went from being in the 50th percentile to the 80th in a very short time span. He is actually t he second doctor to make the same recommendation for her. Again, they don't think it will be necessary forever, but that it might help keep her fuller for a little longer. They think she may be overeating ( or she is just greedy LOL)

  • When my pedi recommended putting cereal in DS's milk due to reflux she told me that rice, oatmeal, or barley would be fine.  I don't know if any are easier on the tummy since he did well with the oatmeal.

  • Both our DS's drank (and drink ) a lot of milk... but they're both pretty big kids. So far our new little guy is wearing 3-6 month clothes at just shy of 2 months! He's not overly chubby, just big all around.  Our first son (2 1/2 yrs) is quite tall now, just over 3 feet.

We're going to have very large grocery bills when the two of them are in high school (~_~)'

  • I would do the breathable bumper for sure.

Does she take a pacifier?  Would that help space out her feedings?  If you give her a cereal, I would opt for oatmeal over rice.

OH, and, can she share that growth with Jude?  The boy has dropped to the 5th-10th percentile for weight :(

  • I would try a breathable bumper also, and I can't help with cereal... I've never even heard of this till the bump. I guess if it ain't broken, don't fix it

:( I know you guys have been dealing with feeding issues I am so sorry to hear that. L should definitely share the growth, she is already fitting nicely into her 3-6 month clothes. She is the cutest little chunky monkey ever!!!!!

I would try the mesh bumpers. We don't have any bumpers in LOs crib but she doesn't sleep in her crib either so we haven't run into this dilemma (:

As far as cereal, I don't intend to give cereal since it really has no nutritional value, just teaches them how to eat more or less. We will go straight to pur?es when she is ready. I would imagine oatmeal is better than rice for many reasons though so its definitely worth a shot.
