10mth olds biting is out of control.

Please help; he is breaking my skin through my clothes and saying "no" or putting him down isn't helping. I put him down and he bites my knees or tries to bite my calfs.

  • If he was older I would suggest leaving the room for a minute after you put him down but 10mos seems a little young for that.

Would putting him down say 6-8 feet away from you help? Or at least give you time to redirect as he comes back in to get your legs?

  • I don't thinK 10mo is too young to put him down and walk away. When e bites, a loud "OW!", followed by "Biting is not appropriate! You hurt mommy." then put him on the floor, in a safe space, of course, and walk out. I think I did 30-45 seconds (really five breaths), came back in, and said "It is not ok to bite people. It hurts."

May have to repeat A LOT, as some babies test the waters more than others. My daughter did it less than a handful of times.

  • My lo has been biting on and off for a few months. Its gotten REALLY BAD in the last few days. nothing worked, except when I ignore it.Its really had to ignore razors digging into your flesh, but he has slowed way down since I stopped reacting.
  • Walking away and sternly saying no bite that hurts worked for me. Ds2 was a biter and everyone told me to bite him back. I could NOT do that he was so little and now at 19 mos he doesn't bite anymore. I think sometimes they like how it feels on their teeth because he still bites his blankets sometimes when he's playing.
  • My DD did this, we would put her in the corner, say no biting sternly and then totally ignore her for 1 minute (at this age). It worked pretty well! I'm doing this method again now on my 2.5 year old with spitting (ugh she likes spitting in my face now for some reason- not fun!)
