Empty boobs?!

Woke up today and both breasts feels soft and empty. I've had some over supply issues and I wake up engorged every morning. LO is fussy and wanting to eat every hour today.

? What gives? Anyone else have this happen? We are going on 3 weeks old with no breast feeding problems what-so-ever!

Re: Empty boobs?!

  • Just continue to breastfeed. Im sure you have milk just your breast are starting to adjust to the ammount and size. If you are worried pump to see how much you are getting if you have a pump. Your local hospital should have a lactation consultant that you can speak to.

  • I just started pumping once a day, in the morning, to either store or take for an outing. This morning I didnt pump because of the empty feeling. I'll see what I get tomorrow.
  • The thing you can do when you are worried about supply is to BF BF BF and pump pump pump.  Oh, and drink lots of water.  Maybe enjoy some oatmeal.  And don't stress about it.  Your body knows what it's doing and it's normal to stop being engorged all the time.  Your body is recognizing when and how much milk it needs to produce and adjusting.  By skipping a normal pumping or feeding time is just making it worse, not better.

  • Like pp said, the best thing you can do for your supply is nurse, nurse, nurse. Your supply is adjusting, so that's why you don't feel as full. Also, there's a growth spurt around 2-3 weeks, so that would explain LO wanting to nurse frequently. Just keep putting baby to breast and that will tell your body how much milk to make for LO.

  • Mine don't feel "empty", but definitely less engorged. I still leak and have milk coming out after DD is done feeding, so I am assuming it's my body adjusting to how much she needs.

  • I had a premie and only allowed to BF once a day until he gets to a healthy weight.  I pump the rest of the time and had this problem.  I had to start drinking a TON more water and have started some other natural methods...oatmeal, lactation cookies (oatmeal, brewers yeast, etc.), and one dark beer a day.  It has really helped with my supply.  I'm not engorged either after 8 hours of sleep, which has been nice.
