Hairstylist tip question...

Next week my hairstylist is using me as a hair model for a color clinic she is doing at work. This is huge for me since hair treatments have been put on hold indefinitely until DH finds a job.

My question is this... it is free to me and a requirement for her job - do I still tip her?

Re: Hairstylist tip question...

  • Tips are never required, and although some stylists do expect them I never do. It's always nice though, ESPECIALLY for a free service. Yes, it is required for her job but she's not getting paid for that time and depending how her salon is set up she might actually be paying for the training.

The majority of my models do tip me, and I am more inclined to ask them back as a model over the non-tipping ones. They generally tip about one third to one half of what the service would actually cost.

aaaand now i know, oops. :)

this is actually surprising to me, though. when i was in massage school, i massaged friends and family members to get my internship hours at the school. no one was officially allowed to tip through the school and no one ever offered me a tip outside of school.  my understanding was that it was simply not allowed when one was not yet a professional. maybe it's different if she already is a hairdresser and is just doing something extra on the side for a color workshop?

    Like I said, it's not expected. ;-)

For whatever reason, it's totally different between massage school and cosmetology school. I don't know why, but I remember getting massaged at schools and being surprised that I wasn't allowed to tip directly. They did still allow tips, but they went into the student's tuition account.

With advanced classes and such I always think (as a model, which I've done many a time!) "Hm, I could get this done for free and tip or I could get it done a week later and pay full price plus tip." So, I tip.

But then, I tend toward over-tipping. It's good karma. ;-)

  • I would, but then again, I looooooove my stylist and would want to give her an extra thanks.  If it was some rando stylist that I was just being a one-time hair model for, I probably wouldn't.

  • Thanks for the input! I am excited to do this because we can't afford hair stuff right now, so I was hoping the answer would be "no"... Wink However, I love her and she is my BFF's SIL, so I wouldn't want to cause any family drama, so I will make sure to tip her something!

    Thank you!!
