Will DH stay the night?

I saw many people mentioning packing clothes for your husband - I don't expect my husband to stay the night. I feel he'll be there during the day but go home at night, have our DD sleep in her own bed, tend to the pets, etc.

Anyone else not planning their DH/SO to spend the night at the hospital?

Re: Will DH stay the night?

  • With my first, my DH absolutely stayed. With my second, I sent him home because we wanted to keep things as 'normal' as possible for my oldest. It was lonely for me (I read a lot and thankfully my SIL came by the first night and stayed with me for three hours just chatting) but it was what made sense. This time around, we'll do the same. The man is going home to tend to the other heathens. Big Smile

  • No, he will be home with ds.  He didn't sleep over when our son was born, either. I don't think it is even allowed and the rooms are tiny.

  • Yes but this is our first baby so we don't have a LO at home to care for yet. Our pups will either be in the kennel for a few days or we will have someone stay in our home to care for them.

  • We live 1 mile from our hospital. Seriously DH could walk if he really wanted. That being said, I don't know yet whether or not he'll stay. Our hospital allows him to, and provides a chair that pulls out to a bed for him. I'd like him to stay I think, but if he'd prefer to go home and sleep in our bed and be more comfortable, but leave as late as he can and come back early, I guess I'd be okay with him going home at night to sleep and shower.

  • The first time he stayed with me and it was perfect. This time we already have a little one at home so he will go home to be with her at night. I'm nervous to be alone in the hospital but I'd be more nervous leaving DD overnight with someone else.
  • Absolutely, he is my support system.  He only left for a few hours the first time and it was while my mom was with me.  My mom will be staying with my son, it won't seem different for him since he's stayed with her a million times since birth.  I can't imagine sleeping in the hospital alone.  Plus, what happens if you progress, and have to start to push and he is at home sleeping?  Labor isn't always a time able thing.

  • He stayed last time and I am so, very thankful he did. It was just such a new experience, I had never been in a hospital before, let alone given birth. We will have DS stay with my parents, and DH will stay at the hospital again. I would like to let him leave to get some extra sleep at some point, not sure how that will work though.

  • He will be with me at the hospital. He will not want to leave his new baby or me. DS is nine and will be staying with grandma.

  • My DH stayed at the hospital with me when we had DS.  He ran home (only about 5 min away) to shower every morning.  This time, I think I'd rather him go home and stay with DS overnight.  My mom will have DS while I'm in labor (at our house if it's overnight), and then he'll probably be at the hospital with us most of the time too.  I'll probably send DH or my mom home with him each afternoon for a nap.
  • Nope. He didn't even stay with our first, and he won't this time either. My parents live about 3 minutes from the hospital, and I wanted at least one of us to get some good sleep before we brought baby home so I insisted that he go over there and get some good sleep in a real bed. Plus, I got a lot of 1-1 baby time, which was amazing.

This time he'll stay at my parents again, but also because I feel like it's really important for our son not to feel like both of his parents left him for the new baby. They can both come and visit all day - and I can relish in our new addition.

  • It will depend on when the baby is born. In general, no, he won't stay. Even if we had someone to stay with the kids, the beds are never comfortable and he can't do anything during the night anyway. If I need help with something, a nurse can help.

With our son, though, he was born at 10pm so by the time everything was said and done it was almost 2am so he just stayed I believe. Or no, he didn't, even then. He went home (my mom was with the kids) and just came back in the morning and brought the girls to meet their brother. The beds are just so crappy usually.

  • Nope! He didn't with our first and I'll be sending him home with this one as well. Get your rest man, baby and I will be home 5 days later and we'll need ya!

  • My DH wont, he'll be home with DS. If my mother comes in for the birth she'll be with me while I'm at the hospital.

It will be much easier for me knowing that someone I trust wholly is caring for DS so I can focus on new LO. If my mom doesn't come in, I have a neighbor/friend who will go with me to the hospital and DH and DS will visit.

  • He'll be deployed. So nope.

My mother might stay the night with me, but unlikely. We've got 2 dogs at home.

  • I'd definitely want him there overnight, but if he felt he needed to get rest at home, I wouldn't be opposed to it. We have cats at home, so we'd probably just leave out extra food for them. We have family nearby if we ended up being in the hospital longer than planned. It's our first, so I'd prefer for him to be there with me at all times.

  • My husband will stay atleast the first night. The dog will just be taken care of by our neighbor. I want to make sure that a blanket with the baby's smell on it goes home to our dog to get acquainted.
  • I have never had to stay over night in the hospital before so DH will definitely be staying since this is our first. I totally understand why those who already have children don't stay. I would feel a lot better with DH there.

  • At my hospital you can't have anyone stay in the room with you unless you have a private room and then they don't even provide anything for them to sleep on. With #2 I enjoyed having the night to myself with my new little one.

  • This is kind of a hard one.  Being as this will be right at the beginning of the new school year about the time this baby comes into the world, I dont want the girls to be all outta whack.  My parents and his cant stay at our house do to health problems and needing machines at night.  I might be able to get my sister to stay there but she gets up early early to go feed the "children of America" as the call it. hahaha!  So send him home or stay....I guess thats something that we will decide once it gets closer.

  • Not 100% sure yet.

DH stayed the whole time when DS was born. Depending on how long I'm in the hospital he will probably stay with me again. DS will be with my parents (both are teachers so they won't have to worry about work in August). They live less than 10 mins from the hospital and DS is around them often/stayed the night there a few times and he loves going there. The main reason I want DH there is because LOs stay in the room with you the whole time (no nursery) and would like his help again. Especially overnight.

  • I think so.  We are only about 4 miles from the hospital so I imagine he will go home to shower and change etc, but I want him there most of the time.

  • For ds he stayed the night and I was sure glad he did.  I was in a lot of pain after my episiotomy and c-section.  He was a big help.

This time, I am not sure though.  Since we will have a 4.5 year old, I don't want both of us disappearing completely for 3-4 days.  It will also depend on how I feel.

  • I think it will depend. If I have a rcs then yes.  If not it will depend on how I feel and if he is getting on my nerves :)

  • With my first I absolutely wanted him to stay. I could barely move especially the first night. (I pushed for 2 1/2 hours and had some major swelling that made it hard for me just to change positions let alone sit up and walk.)

I'm delivering at a different hospital and am hoping that the DH accomodations are MUCH better than the last hospital I delivered at. He complained the whole time w/ DS. This time it will probably depend on how I feel. I would like to say that he will go home w/ Landon and take care of the dogs. I would feel more confident being alone w/ a newborn this time. However, if I'm not feeling well my parents may end up taking care of DS and the dogs.

  • Nah, I don't think I'll need him there. Last time, I was there for 2 weeks and I was sharing a room. He slept maybe 2 or 3 nights. He was also in finals in school, but we didn't live near family so I would have been completely alone otherwise. This time, I won't make him stay. I'll be okay.

  • DH was there the whole time from induction night until we left with DD but this time I told him he should sleep at home and keep things as normal as possible for DD.

I'll call if I really need him there but with the nurses checking on me and the baby in the nursery there's really no point in him also getting bad sleep since he'll need to be on his game when it's time to take the new LO home.

  • Last time he stayed the entire time, but left only a short time to pick up stuff from the house. This time I expect him to stay the entire time as well as night time. I do not want to be alone, it's a very emotional time and I need him with me. Our daughter will stay with grandparents or my brother. We have a cat, and my brother will probably keep her while we are having baby.
