Pregnant after IF

? for multiple IVFers...

I'm about to start IVF#3 - with a new RE.  She wants to do AH this time and recommends transferring 3 embryos on a 3dt.   In someways, I feel that I need to do that - since I've really already transferred 4 embryos total between my two other cycles.  But it still scares me that I'll end up with triplets.   But I'm more scared that I'll end up with nothing at all.

So if you transferred more than 2 after multiple IVFs - I'm just curious how many you are actually pregnant with now?

  • Hi sweetie!  I wish you the best of luck this cycle.  We transferred 3 this time (pregnant with one).  My new RE did AH and they had a chart that determined how many they felt was appropriate based on how many times you have tried, etc.  Based on the chart it said 3 and we could change it if we wanted to.  We had transferred 4 the cycle before.  The first three cycles we made crap embies and the last cycle an 8 cell, a 7 cell and a 6 cell that were all good quality.

  • I think so much really depends on the embryo quality. For my 2nd transfer, we transferred three 3d embryos and got a BFN. For my 4th transfer, we transferred two 5d embryos and both stuck. Day 3 embryos are a bit more of a crapshoot than blasts since you know less about their quality than day 5 embryos. If you have 3 embryos that are 8 cells with no fragmentation on day 3, I might give a little pause to that, but if the quality is anything less than ideal, I think transferring 3 (at day 3) is reasonable at this point. Sending you lots of good vibes for this cycle!
    IUIs #1-3 (1x unmedicated, 2x Clomid) = 2 BFNs, 1 m/c at 7w3d
    IUIs #4-6 (injects) = 3 BFNs

    FET #2 = BFN

Thanks Beth!  That makes me feel better :)  I'm excited to be at a new clinic - they have much better success rates than my old one - so I'm hoping they can get me KU with one cycle.

I did tell my RE I would prefer to try a 5dt at this point - but its really going to depend on how many eggs I end up getting and what the embryologist thinks.  So I think that is why we are going ahead planning for a 3dt - and we can always switch to a 5dt.   If I do end up doing a 5d and they look good - I don't think I would want to put back more than 2.

  • We only did 2 rounds ... did not do AH the first time as we transferred on day 5.  The second time we did AH and transferred 2 on day 3.  One stuck. We talked about transferring 3 ... I was 34.5 (so not quite 35 where 3 is "acceptable") and we'd had a failed cycle.

I was scared out of my mind to transfer 3.  In the end we did 2 because the quality was there on day 3.  Had they not been very high quality we would have done 3.

I'm not sure that helps, but it was my experience.

  • Hi there,

There's a lot of factors to take into consideration.  Age, disagnosis, egg and embryo quality.

For this cycle (4th fresh) I transferred 4 good quality day 3 embryos, and I'm pregnant with a singleton.  I'm also AMA, and have implantation issues.

In the past I've transferred 4 day 3 embryos (twice), for my FET I transferred 4, and for my PGD cycle I transferred 3 perfect quality (my RE's words) blasts.  All ended with BFN.

    Good luck!

  • Hi.  We have severe MFI and haven't had many embryos to work with.  The first time we only had two and transferred both.  The second IVF we had 3 ebryos.  Only one of them was considered good quality.  The other two were grade C.  We ended up transferring all 3 and ended up pregnant with one.  It was a tough decision, but in the end we knew we would always wonder if we transferred the wrong two of three if we didn't transfer them all.   Good luck with your cycle and your decision.

  • We actually transferred 3 on our first IVF - poor quality and none took.  Then 2 on our 2nd - good quality and - both took, but one implanted in the uterus and one in my tube - they both stopped growing.  For our 3rd IVF we transferred 2 again, but I pushed for a 5dt instead of a 3dt, which is what my first 2 IVFs were, and both took.  I am now 10w2d pregnant with twins.

I would say wait until you know the quality before deciding how many to transfer.  I would also push for a 5dt and if they look good, then I would only put 2 back.

A 5 day transfer is more lucrative. My clinic only does 5 days.

I'm just curious why you say it's more lucrative?  There are studies that support both theories.  Some clinics only do 3dt and some only do 5dt.  My clinic prefers 5dt, which we did my first cycle.  We did a 3dt the second time and that's the one I'm pregnant from.  I'm not convinced the 3dt made the difference, but it's my story.

We chose a 3dt the second time because we lost so many embyros between day 3 and day 5 the first cycle that we figured we'd give it a shot.  There's theories that support both .. if it won't make it in a petri dish until day 5, it won't make it in the uterus.  Putting it back in it's "natural" environment is better than a lab so get them in sooner.  I'm not sure we will ever really know the answer to that.

I think you need to defer to your RE's experience and recommendation.  I know equally as many women who got pregnant on 3dt as ones that got pregnant on 5dt.
