daycare vent

My dd's daycare is closed from christmas eve until january 5th, and they are charging us for that time.  They were also closed three days in a row in August "teacher days", and then two in October.  Also charged for that time.  Everyone is entitled to a vacation, I understand, but at 1200 a month, charging when you're not available to care for them isn't fair.  I know my daycare isn't the only one that does this, but it angers me anyway.  At least lower the tuition that month or something....

Re: daycare vent

  • It can seem frustrating.  At first I thought it was weird too.  To put it in perspective though, they do need to run the business and take vacation etc.  If they stopped charging for those days off, they would just raise tuition to cover it anyway.  You would pay 1350 per mo, but not pay those days KWIM?

We recently transferred to preschool after 2 years of nanny.  If you had a nanny, you would pay twice as much AND then pay vacation, sick days and holidays too!

Hope you fell better about it soon!  :)

  • I know, I hear you. We pay full rates (which includes diapers and food) for two weeks a year. Also, there are a bunch of holidays that I don't get off that we pay for, and there's a 3rd week of unpaid vacation.  Three weeks of alternate care + holidays when I H and I only get 3 weeks' vacation each is tough.

  • I know--you're right that they still have to run the business.  I'm just bitter.  I should mention, too, that my dd is there only 1/2 days, and we still get charged full price ( which I kind of understand b/c she's still taking up another child's slot)--but you'd think we'd get SOME break! Okay, done kvetching!
  • Our center explained that they take those days into account when determining the rate, so while it might seem like you're being charged extra, they're just distributing the cost evenly throughout the year.

  • Our day care charges for "teacher days" also, but those are the days that they use to make sure the teachers are still certified.  Personally, I'm all for paying for "teacher days" if it means that they keep their staff.

It sounds like your day care does what my job does.  Puts all the holidays at the end of the year.  Think of all the random holidays that you are saving when they only close for one set time.  It makes it easy for you, because you don't have any random holidays sneak up on you where you suddenly don't have child care on a Monday.  It's worse paying for day care and STILL having to burn vacation because the day care is closed that day.
